285/70/r17 E Rated

Are Toyo Open Country AT the only tire on the market in the 285/70/17 E rating? I have inheritied a 32 ft 5th wheel and the D rated BFG worry me since I will be pushing 6K# on them.

No, Nitto Dura Grapplers are also 'E' rated and are great tires. I have only 5000 miles on mine so not sure about wear though they still look brand new. Unless something better comes along these will be the only tire I run on my Ram.

Toyo Open Country A/Ts
Nitto terra grapplers
Nitto Dura grapplers
Hankook ATM RF10
BFG is also making an E rated 285 now.

Apparently BFG just came out with an E rated 285. May be R75 though.

Its a 70 series. What doesn't make sense is the weight rating. Their D rated 285/70/17 has a 3195lb weight rating. Guess what the E rated 285/70/17 can carry? The E rated version has the same 3195lb rating.

I'm thinking it must be a misprint on their site.

I emailed them about it and got the standard doublespeak. They sent me a 2 paragraph reply and it didn't answer either of the two questions I asked them.

The D vs. E rating thing has been beat to death. From what I gather, the only REAL difference is that an E can handle higher pressure. Granted, some E-rated tires might have a stiffer sidewall or other qualities, and the higher pressure might make for a more "controlled" load, but in the end it's the weight rating that matters.

It's probably a reaction to marketing demand as much as anything. A lot of you guys won't run anything but E's on your trucks.

Yup, I won't run anything but "E" on my truck and "G" on my trailer. The more sidewall flex a tire has the weaker the sidewall gets with time and the higher possibility of a blowout. I'm sure toyhauler owners can atest to that.
