22.6mpg (hand calc)

Just thought yall might like to know that it's possible to eek out better mileage from these CTD's. With my manual tranny, using "hypermiling" techniques, and driving 55mph, I got 760 miles from one tank of diesel. I filled up with 33.63 gallons of diesel, giving me 22.6mpg (hand calc). Of course my overhead was way off (it was reading 29.6mpg). It looks like I could have run it to 800+ miles on that tank but I knew there wasn't another diesel station for a while.

Oh yeah...I set another new record for this fillup: $150 to fill the tank . $4.45/gallon.

That is totally believable at 55mph. Only problem is that around here you'd get your a$$ run over doing that on the highway I can get just a hair over 20 mpg doin 65 with no headwind and I'm 4x4 with a slushbox and 33x12 tires. It's so flat here in Florida it's pretty easy to get an accurate reading. I've calc'd my last 10 tanks and it's pretty consistent at that. No box, no mods really other than what's in my sig. Stock height too (except for what the tires lift it). I don't have a clue what my overhead thinks I get, never look at it.

Again the problem is that even at 65 on I-95 you end up being a rolling road block. However, I must say, I might be nuts, but it seems people (especially the OTR guys) our driving a LOT slower than they used to. Might just be my imagination too.

Yeah I've noticed people have slowed down too, including the semi's. I even get people tucking in behind me when I'm doing 55mph. I just stick to the slow lane and since our interstates here in So Cal have 4-6 lanes per side, you don't end up creating a rolling roadblock.

My last tank got me 22.65 MPG, mixed between highway (65-70mph) and mountain driving.

The last tank go me 18.63 MPG with a light (3000#) trailer.

My mileage and overhead accuracy have both improved since I got a reflash.

I usually get aggressive with the truck on on ramps, so I'm sure I could milk it for slightly better mileage.

My mileage is best using about 10-20% biodiesel or injector lube. This tank I have about 5% bio, and a little bit of two-stroke. Injectors seem to be happy so far.

900 mile trip non towing netted me 22.7 on my 05 Cummins. Overhead showed 23.1 and I ran between 60 to 65 the whole trip.

I also noticed people are driving a lot slower since fuel has skyrocketed. I was running 70-72mph and only got passed by 2 cars in 400 miles. At that speed I averaged 19.4mpg. At 63ish I was getting 20.15 in the hills of Alabam'.

Finally got my first road trip in. All hwy driving at 65 to 70 mph with the exception of about 10 miles of road construction at 35mph. Overhead said 18.1 hand calc was 17.8 all daytime driving. No wind or big grades to pull.

As I read in the "hypermiling" link this includes shutting down at red lights. Do you shut down at lights?? I would think that to be pretty hard on the batts & starter restarting a diesel at every light. I know with the manual tranny you can coast in neutral at times and net higher m.p.g.'s which would also give you a "false" Average MPG reading. Slowing down and easy takeoffs/acceleration would definitely increase m.p.g.'s. I believe in using the cruise control wherever possible and wish other people would use it too. That way they wouldn't have to worry about their speed while on the phone, reading, eating, putting makeup on or shaving. Sometimes it's really hard trying to maintain a steady speed on CC with everyone else not using CC and their unsteady mode of driving.

Thumbs up

You will actually get more MPGs withOUT CC, and use a light foot when your going through hills. On a flat terrain, CC would problably be the same as a light foot.

I don't like to use the CC because it seems to be to aggressive , like when I reset it after stopping ,then hit the reset before I am up to the set speed it will put me back in the seat. Also , I live in some hilly terrain and the CC seems to try to keep me at the set speed at any cost.

Fuel economy

I did a trip last week from Montreal to Colombus Ohio I ran 1069 KM with 34 Gallon of fuel I don t know how many miles this would do but this was the best I ever did with a tank I set the crouise at 65 MPH and just enjoy the ride.

I wish I could get the kind of mileage you guys are getting. I just drove back from Sacramento last night, 10 mph tail wind, 65 to 70 the whole way, light traffic on cruise control 95% of the way, unloaded, looking for the highest mileage I could get. My overhead showed 17.8, which is actually high, it's usually 1.5 mpg high, which would leave me suffering with 16.3 mpg.
