That is because you work the heck out of your trucks and get them broke in faster than most others on here. If everyone regularly pulled 10K+ lbs in the first 10k miles, they would get a lot better mileage too. I think a lot of people that complain about poor mileage don't work their trucks hard enough. I didn't put a significant load on mine until about 6k miles, and immediately seen a difference in mileage and power. I have 11k now, and mileage is steadily climbing with every tank. My tank average is up to 16, and that is with about 75% stop & go city driving. If I am out on the highway being nice to my truck, it will approach 20. These are all hand calcs as my OH is consistently 2.5-3 mpg high.

anyways, had nothing better to do today so I took a 260 mile trip (130 each way) just to see what the mighty Cummins was capable of. kept it at 65mph the whole way (just below my vibration point) for the most part (slower thru a city), AC running most of the time, between 81 and 86 degrees out, rolling at just shy of 1900 RPM, stopped at 2 rest areas and a restaurant where it idled a couple minutes before shutdown, 20000 on the odometer and don't think its ever really been worked hard a day of its life, 7150 LBS with me in it and a full tank of fuel, even filled up at the same diesel pump both times, everything stock, and overhead said 20.5 which I thought was odd since most peoples are much higher than actual.
whether you believe it or not doesn't bother me, I have no reason to lie
sorry I'm just a little excited about this

These trucks are capable of doing three things very well:
1. Pulling small houses off of their foundations if you need too.
2. Making insane amounts of power on mostly stock parts.
3. Relative to their size, get awsome mileage (20+) on a regular basis.
And they can do #3 while still being capable of #1 and #2, all in the same truck. I've never pulled heavy at all and have gotten excellent mileage right off of the dealer lot. To date, I've gotten two tanks to last over 820 miles each (~23mpg). Mostly average 680-750 miles/tank(~20 mph). If I ever have a need to pull 20K pounds down the road, I have the ability to do so. What an awsome vehicle!

I've been getting 19 city and 22 highway hand calc ever since I started adding PS silver and 2 stroke at each fillup.
Prior to I was getting 17.5 city and 20 highway.
I drive 90% city so I know the city numbers are good.
I keep my tires at 50 psi front and back.
I drive like an idiot most of the time.
The engine is way noisier, (underlying rattling) before I add the above fluids.
I never blow smoke.

my '03 2500 HO NV5600 3.73 gets gets 22+ on my 110 mile a day commute along with several of my neighbors driving DMAX/7.3 PSDs and Cummins. Those poor 6.0 PSD guys get mouthy when we talk about 20+ mpgs. I just refueled at the Big Cabin truck stop on I-44, and lots of longhaul/RV transport guys and gals refuel here. One 6.0PSD owner approached me to inquire about empty mpgs on my Cummins. The look on his face almost made you feel sorry for him. He was in a '05 3500 SRW 6.0 PSD auto and just penciled a 15 mpg empty from Santa FE on his back trip to Indaina for another RV. His comment was I was about number 10 Cummins owner that was getting 20+ mpg empty and mumbled he just may have to get one.

21 mpg....only a dream for me.
I just turned 10k on mine and the best tank yet has been 17mpg on a 240 mile round trip averaging 60 mph. 70% of my driving is city and rural county roads. I drive 7 miles to work and there's 5 stop signs along the way. Every tank is about 15-15.5 mpg. But I'm not complaining, had an '05 Dakota 4.7L and got the same mileage.

I drove from Denver to Salt Lake last weekend, about 600 miles. I took US 40 rather than the interstate. I ran a little fast until I got a warning for 73mph in a 65mph zone, then I slowed to the high 60's the rest of the way. The average came to 21.2mpg. That was the high tank from a 3000 mile trip. The trip on the whole averaged mid 19mpg range. The truck currently has 12,000 miles on it. When I purchased the truck last fall, all dealers were telling me that the mileage should continue to improve into the 20 to 40k range. I suggested that I should probably buy a used truck then. They didn't think that was too funny.
