The light comes on my 04.5 and my friends 05. I think the reason for not having the light come on when the IAT is above 68 Degrees is so you dont sit and wait for the light. Some people already dont wait for the light when it comes on.
Basically its telling you that the IAT is above 68 degrees so you dont need to wait because the grid heater wont cycle anyway and you dont need to wait to start the truck.

I also have an 06 and I found out if the temp outside is above 50 degrees the pre heat light does not come on. Below 50 degrees it does. I hope that this helps
