2004.5 315hp or 325hp / 600 or 610??

I have just bought a 2004.5 3/4 ton 4x4. This is my third dodge cummins to own and wow they just keep getting better and better!! I thought my 91' was incredible, then I sold that and bought a new 01', now having sold that and purchased a 04.5' I am amazed at what they have done with this already incredible engine. I looked at the engine tag that gives when it was made, the serial #, etc... In the engine hp slot it says 325 hp!! I was under the impression that the 2004.5 had 315 hp and 600 lbs of torque, I am a little confused! If you could shed some light on this subject I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks and God bless ya!

had an even bigger surprise myself, I thought I had a 555 motor but I got the 325 sticker too! Now take it down to the dealer and have it flashed to the tsb listed at the end of my sig for an extra 10 ft lbs and some other small issues worked out. btw time to fill out the sig with the stats of your rig and get ready to update it , often

I have an 04 and my tag says 325HP but i am curious to know if it is a 600 or 610...How can i tell that?

The mfg. date on the door is 01/04.

Now does that mean it is an 04.5 as well or no?

If it's 325hp, it's considered an 04.5.

I have yet to read anything definitive about how the change came about between 600-610lbft.

Supposedly there were no changes to the 05 engines to explain the difference. Some believe it's marketing spin to keep pace with competitors' claims. Others would like to believe it's in the programming (reflash).

If anyone can enlighten us with something more concrete regarding this, I'm sure we'd all like to know.

What the Heck does Re-flash mean?
Flashing is the process by which updated software (firmware, actually) is installed into our trucks' engine management computers. Whenever it is determined that a program update is needed (as in the case of the fuel mileage TSB - 037 as it is sometimes referred) to solve a particular engine problem or problems, often the relatively simple process of reprogramming or reflashing the computer is performed. It's a little like downloading and installing service packs for your Windows computers at home or work to keep your operating software up-to-date.

Some people believe that the mileage reflash also increases the torque to 610lbft. It could be true, but I haven't read anything definitive on the matter.

I heard somwhere that the 05s have a new turbo charger. that might explain the increase in tq.

I'm pretty new around here. As I look at the sticker on my '05, the engine option says " 5.9L Cummins Turbo Diesel - 610 lb-ft". I've not been under the hood recently... hey, it's below zero out here in Nebraska....

yes your's is an 04.5

mine was one of the very first 05's made. took it in for the mileage reflash. mine was one of the very last engines available for the reflash. anyway... mine came with the cummins 325/600 but when i took in for mileage reflash the service manager (who is a friend of mine) advised me that it was a software upgrade to the 610 that all of the new 05's have in them.

your's should be a 600 (which should tell you on your window sticker) until you have the software upgrade. this should be no charge from the dealer.

TSB 18 037 04 is the TSB# you need to give them.

hope this helps some
