2003 S.O. poor fuel mileage
Ever since I got the truck my mileage seems to be less than adequate. Around town I only get about 13.5 to 14.5 max. I did the tone ring mod, and I currently have my Quad XZT disconnected because I had my electronic fuel acutator replaced at the dealer a couple weeks ago and haven;t had a chance to replace it. Is this normal or not. Any suggestions would be apprecitated. Kevin

Red, Around town 13.5 to 14.5 is the norm in stop and go traffic. I average 16.9 to 17.5 when driving 50/50 city and highway. The 2wd guys get about 2 to 4 more mpg but they are stuck on pavement. I barely got out of the woodlot the otherday with a load of logs and a foot of snow on soft ground in 4 Lo. (Parked on the downslope a little too far) ks

My miliage not towing never drops below 17. 50% highway 50% city. Lots of hills. I know I would be dissapointed to be getting that miliage. When you put your 285s on did you have the speedo corrected? Air filter clean? How much better was it when you got it? Not sure if you guys have blended fuel down there or not but that will cause you miliage to drop a little in the winter.

My 03 HO 48RE has NEVER gotten good mileage at all. Around town, I get 11-12 at most, on the highway at 65-70 I'll see 16. Any faster and it's 14.
Towing, ti's even worse. I get 10-11 mpg at most towing a tiny 2-place enclosed snowmobile trailer (Haulmark) that weighs 2800 lbs empty. Add a couple of sleds and it's 10 at most. Add my Lance camper (which I've since sold) and it's 9 mpg.
I have 41k on it now and have towed or hauled heavy with it for most of the time I've had it. The dealer has nothing they can do about it, they say.

In the last 3 weeks I have install Nitto Mud Grappler 35" tires (yes I had the revs changed), Scotty Air 5 and the most recent MBRP Muffler. I keep my Banks 6 gun always set to 3. I hand calculated my mileage today for driving back and forth to work on surface streets and it was 11.4. Overhead said 12.4.
Although this is not the best it is still even better than my wifes new Avalanche so I am cool with it.

Guys, Mileage varies alot on these trucks. When people do the tone ring mod they see that the timing varies alot between setups. If I was getting terrible mileage. I'd do the tone ring mod and if this helped alot I'd get a performance cam done to get even better mileage. I'd check the torque converter on the auto and get at least a single disc performance torque converte. If you have jingle get the flexplate, valve body and internals do up. The autos can get ok mileage or terrible mileage the 6speed can get great or good mileage. 4.10 will get less mileage than 3.73 unless the tires are larger in diameter and not much wider.
Man, if I lived in Alberta I'd be getting nervous as you guys with more than one fuel hog in the family are gonna be lookin at Alberta after ya drain Iraq. ks
