11.3 mpg...Normal ??
With about 1200 miles on our new '06 2500 Quad 4x4 short bed with the CTD, I just filled up again and hand calculated the fuel mileage to be 11.3. This is probably 75% in town and 25% highway with fairly conservative driving. FYI, the overhead read 14.3 mpg...I never trust those things, although I believe that's what most people go by when they brag about how good their mileage is. As a side note, my '02 Ford F250 crewcab 4x4 loaded down with accessories and tools (it weighs quite a bit more) gets 16-17 mpg during 50/50 city/hwy driving with the overhead reading 22 mpg.
Is 11.3 normal for an engine that's not yet broken in?

low mileage
First additional question might be. Where is in town? 11.2 MPG driving in San Francisco 75% of the time might be acceptable. I don't believe that I would find that mileage acceptable some other places. Have you changed your oil yet. My mileage seemed to go up after I changed the oil the first time. I have an 06 Megacab 3500, dual rear wheel, 4x4, fully loaded, 6-speed. I live in San Francisco and drive conservatively. I am seeing roughly 15.25 MPG on average, hand calculated. My overhead is also off, it consistently reads roughly 16.5. I have about 4.5 K miles now, my mileage started out at about 12.5 brand new. So to has come up substantially percentage wise. I would love to see higher mileage but find the mileage I'm getting to be acceptable. I lemoned an 05 F-350 crew cab, dually, 4x4, automatic, before purchasing the Dodge and saw 12.5 MPG driving the same roads the same way. The highest I ever saw with that truck was one tank at 15.25 MPG strickly highway miles at 60-65 MPH with very few hills. My 02 E-350 7.3L automatic sees about 13 around the city and 16.5 to 18.3 on the open road depending on load and terrain. I have a friend that has an 04 F-250 Crew Cab V-10 4X4 which doesn't have the power that any of my vehicles have had. He consistently sees roughly 10 MPG average. Hope I have been able to give you a better idea of what might be reasonable to ask as far as MPG.

Vzarich,
The around town driving is in Midland, Texas. It's a mid-sized town with a lot of traffic lights and stop signs, but no really heavy traffic causing the rush-hour traffic jams seen in larger cities. I haven't changed the oil and filter yet, but I have installed an Amsoil Eaa synthetic element air filter in the stock air box. I thought I would change the oil at about 2k. Thanks for your response...it sounds like my mileage may be a little on the low side, but not hopelessly low.

My worst tank was when it was new and it was 15.3 hand calculated. I have over 6000 miles now and I am getting 17.8-18.5 consistantly hand calculated at 75/25 Highway/city and I keep a very detailed record with every fill up. I have not yet towed anything more than about 2500lbs. Keep trying to find the time to put the Jeep on the trailer and drag it around to help get it broken in faster. If you can, try to load it down with 6k-10k lbs and go for a good hard drive. This will help the mileage.

I'm seeing bad mileage as well in my '06. I'm getting around 13.5 in town. My 2002 used to get 17 or so. One thing I notice about going from the 2wd to the 4x4 is that it seems like I need to use more throttle to get around, which makes sense, but I'm surprised that it's pretty noticeable. Of course, comparing throttle pressure on my foot between a 2nd gen. and a 3rd gen isn't exactly an apples to apples comparasin either.

Just filled up this morning, My truck is still new with less than 1,000 miles on it and I calculated 12.94 mpg. This is mostly 10-15 mile runs close to home and one interstate run of 50 miles (310 total miles from previous fill up). I did take time filling and made sure it was full.
I am hoping to see it come up some. I will not be doing any "work" with it i.e. towing or loading any time soon.
I know....why in the world did I buy it?...
'Cuz I like the looks of a big truck w/training wheels.

Im seeing 16/17mpg with 80% city 20% highway...
Could get a little better if I stayed out of it too, but the anger always rises in city traffic, just so many idiots on the road!
Truck has 38k on it, and could get better if I did more highway, but cant where I live right now.
In a few months ill see how 315s effect my mileage too

You guys have some issues with your truck. I would bring them back to the dealer and get the Fuel mileage flash. I have the same motor as you guys and I am a bit heavy footed around town and off the lights and I am getting 15. BUT this was only after I put an airbox on it. Letting these thing breath helps out ALOT. Another thing is a tonnaue cover. Try the flash first then go to a air box and a bed cover. You will noticed a few more MPG's with the cover and airboxs

My brand new truck is doing between 17-19! I do city and highway driving. I drive light sometimes and I am hard on it others. I guess I am pretty lucky. The overhead reads pretty acurate. Just calculated 18.87 MPG on my last fill. I have 1300 miles on the truck.

The one thing that I have found to help my milage is alway's try to keep the rpm's down. When I am driving in town I make sure the tq/c locks up as soon as it can by letting of the go peddle a little. My friend just drives his with steady foot pressure and it takes longer for it to lock up. Therfore higher rpm's = less mpg. Another thing that I like to do is if I am driving a road with the speed limit at 45 mph, I will take it up to 50 to get it to lock up the tq/c (higher gear) then go back down to 45. Once again lower rpm's = better mpg. My truck gets better milage at 55 with the tq/c locked up than at 45 with it unlocked. I hope this makes some sence and helps someone besides me.
