Unhappy 08 6.7 cat full

These new trucks are terrible Just bought one and did 6000km trip from Edm.Alberta canada to toronto on Canada The first thing fuel mileage 13.5 to 14.5 empty this is horrible. Got caught in storm and ended up sitting on side of highway miles from nowhere and -29 c & high winds left truck running when i woke up overhead sats (cat full) and check engine light on dash on.When we could finally go stopped at dealership to see about getting fixed 3hr wait and then would be in shop over 2 hrs so they said ok to drive home
apparently there is some kind of container they have to clean and put in somekind of sensor. the truck only has 10000km on it and I am not impressed I am wondering the guys do that work up north where you can not shut trucks down as there is no power to plug in and it gets real cold I think if I could I would take it back to chrysler ANY IDEAS welcome

That sucks man, the new emissions stink for some ppl. I feel bad for ya but at the same time did ya read your owners manual or do any research before ya bought it? All the big three are the same now, they have Diesel particulate filters that trap the soot and then have to do a regen to burn it off into ash, and if you dont drive it enough (dont let em sit and idle), then the DPF will fill up with soot and do what you have described. It sucks for some ppl that need to let them idle, but at the same time, i have yet to have a single problem with anything on my truck .

You have to put the truck in high idle if idling for an extended period of time.

I had to have it enabled by the dealership.

You bascially put it in park, turn on the cruise control and push set. It goes up initially to about 1100 rpm. You can take it on up from there using the accellerate control on the steering wheel. I put mine about 1300 prm.

I think this resolves the extended idling issue.

I had it on high idle @1100 and the thing still plug up And after driving a few hundred clics the over head went out but check engine stayed on for miles i think after turning truck off and hours later it went out

I know a few service trucks with that same problem. They have to run all day to operate their air compressor (under hood) and just burn it off. Put the pedal down and wait for it to burn off. I think Ford is the only one to do a DPF purge at idle, hense the flame-thrower reputation.

Drive it is all I can say..

I think that one of the more recent flashes will make the truck regen at idle. Has your truck had the latest PCM flash?

The flame thrower was a result of faulty injectors/turbos leaking diesel/oil into the DPF . When it would regen it caused the Flame. DPF by itself does not cause the fords to flame.

Pretty much Ford changed the tailpipes on the exhausts to change the airflow characteristics to prevent the flame thrower things. And if you think you are getting bad mileage on your truck, you should hear the gripes over on the Ford site. Some guys haven't broken into 10 MPG territory, of course, on the F-450s moving something just shy of 10K lbs down the road...
