04.5 + Engines & Oil Soot Results
We have all read, heard and worried about the BLACK oil that shows-up in our engines just after a couple of miles.
Let's see some posts on what the REAL WORLD DATA shown from engine oil analysis test done on those dark, scary oils.

Advocate of getting the ban button used on him...
Good question. I'd love to see the results of some of the analysises being done. I will be doing my second oil change in about 2500 miles and was trying to decide if I should have it analized this time or not.

Thats what I figured. At, 5181 miles, 6083 miles, and 6874 miles (on the oil) I had 0.5% insolubles with Rotella Dino 15w40. 5327 miles (on the oil) with Amsoil HDD 15w40 I had 0.3%. I will be sampling soon again with the amsoil at the 12k mark. Truck has 28000 on it with TST powermax added at 10k.

I do a oil analysis everytime I change oil. I change my oil at 7500mile intervals and the highest I've seen is 1.1%soot. I did add a bypass filter, so that could be reducing the soot a bit, but soot is submircon and even a bypass filter isn't really effective at removing soot. I did remove my bypass filter last week due to a leak, and I'm interested in seeing the results of my next oil sample.

At 30,000 miles on the truck and 5000 miles on the oil.....(0.3%)
At 35,000 miles on the truck and 5000 miles on the oil......(0.5%)
Anything less that 0.6 is supposed to be good, according to Blackstone Labs.

I think people over worry about things, including me.
I remember the days when we would change oil on the old field tractors back in the 60's and 70's. The oil that came out of them was so black it was almost as thick as molases, well maybe not that thick but you get the picture.

Yeah...I remember the days when you went 100k on diff. lubes, never flushed your trans, and changed your oils @ 3k miles and never worried about it. And amazingly those cars lasted...And just think with the newer technology, better oils and cleaner burning cars we have actually had to increase maintaince. Looks like the companies marketing scheme is working like they planned.

I remember the GOOD OLE DAYS ALSO and vehicles DID NOT last as long as ones built since the mid/late 80s and up.I remember the first 80 model Datsun we had come in with 200k and change on the odometer and the shop was like WOW.Before the 80s a 100k was a lot.I think a well made vehicle now should go 200k plus with normal(however its defined) care.Better fliuds and better service intervals.
