'04 or '04.5

New here, I just bought a 2004 3500 q-cab laramie with the cummins, my question is how do Ifind out if its a 2004.5, and what are the main differences between the two.

Thanks, Eric

Sorry buddy, wrong generation.

93 and older - 1st gen
94 - 02 - 2nd gen
03 - current - 3rd gen

I don't know what the difference is but I'll move this into the proper forum for you so you can get an answer.

I just noticed you just recently joined. On behalf of the Admin here, welcome.

The '04 has the 305hp/555tq engine and the '04.5 bumped up to 325hp/600tq. Look on the driver side of the engine towards the front for the data plate. It will show the hp rating.

Correct. All trucks built as of 1/1/04 are 04.5s.

You have a good flowing head and great valves but you have defuelling on shifts. '04.5 is the best year to get of the two. There isn't such a thing as a bad year in these trucks. ks

The '04.5 has a kitty & a third injection event. Because of that, some say that the '04 gets better milage than the '04.5, and thus is better.

FYI, I have a lifetime average of 18.3 MPG (get up to 21 on the highway)on my '04.5 (315 H2's, 6 speed, 4x4), but I drive REALLY light - 70 mph & rarely push it hard enough to get black smoke.
