disappointed
I bought a new air intake system for my truck (AEM Brute force) which i love everything about except one thing and that is it aint that loud when it comes to turbo noise.. I figured that thing would scream like it did on my 5.9 but i guess not. i mean to tell ya that its still just as quiet as when i had the factory setup with that baffle out of the tube.... i didnt think that the silencer ring made that big of a difference!! Has anybody figured out a way to take that stupid thing off.

I figured that baffle in the tube was doing most of the silencing. How did your stock one sound without it? I would expect you had more sound then and just not anymore now... My S&B surely woke up the sound department. It is not loud or anything, just a noticeable nice improvement over dead silence.

the stock intake without the silencer was pretty noticeable difference inside the cab but still quiet. after i put on the aem i could notice its alil louder but not by much then the stocker with the silencer removed. ive been sneaking over to this forum and seeing what people have been talking about..http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/ge...tml#post355195
there must be a cleaner way of taking one out then this!!!!!

My aFe is gives a good whistle, but not like it does on Dad's 02. I think its just the nature of the beast.
I have read somewhere that the silencer ring shouldn't be removed, but if you wanna go first.......

I read that it a pain to get out, and will probably end up damaged and unusable. Take your time and document this for us if you go through with it please!

I've "heard" (please don't ask me where right now, can't remember) that the 6.7 will loose some power with the silencer ring removed. Plus its quite a challenge to remove. On the 5.9 it made no difference, but from what I've been able to gather, the ring on the 6.7 is there for a purpose.

IIRC the silencer rings actually serves to help airflow into the turbo.

Good luck there. Other than being a "silencer ring" I think it has other purposes as well. So be wary of some other trade-offs in performance. I believe it not only silences, but directs the air.

I believe your right.. i just need to weigh my options alil better, im just not sure yet. maybe tonight after a few beers

If the "silencer ring" is the way I was shown, it helps to direct air flow back to the inlet of the turbo for control of surge (or bark) across the wide range of pressures and speeds it needs to see.
I have a diagram from Garret, but most turbos use this type of flow for "map width enhancement". The silencer ring sits just in front of the recirculated flow to the inlet of the compressor.

Maybe I'm missing the boat, but I find the shrill whine of the turbo annoying on long trips. I put a TAG3 in my 97 just to help keep it from being so hard on the ears. The exhaust side of the turbine makes more noise anyway, go straightpipe. IMHO I wouldn't fool with this version of turbo.
