DELETED! Have a few questions...

It has been about two months now since I had the full deletes done, love it! The new exhaust sounds great, not sure how I ever lived without the turbo whistle, have more power, running cooler, better fuel mileage, and the Edge has several new gauges for me!

Big thanks to DTR! I'm new to the diesel world, and had never heard of all these mods before this site.

I have a few newbee questions:

#1. My "Edge" has a setting to run my truck after I turn off the key until the EGT reaches a specific temperature. What temp do you recommend? I had it set at 450, but I get over that just driving out of the neighborhood...

#2. Is it possible to run my truck code free with the Edge? I'm still throwing EGR codes, can't get a straight answer from them. If I don't give it time to clear the Codes on start-up, I also get a DPF code and a mass air-flow code. (I'm also getting O2 sensor codes, they told me to reinstall the sensors in the exhaust)

#3. I don't get any smoke when I step on it (that's good), but I get a gray / whitish smoke when decelerating, especially down hill. Normal?

#4. Holy powerful exhaust smells! I really don't know what to expect, so not sure if it's normal, but the exhaust is a lot more potent (I guess there is a few filters missing). My brother followed me down the canyon, and had to roll his windows up, said I was going to suffocate him. If the truck wasn't too loud for a fast food drive-up, the exhaust would be too overwhelming to leave it running. I guess this is very subjective, but do you consider this normal?

I have several more questions, but that's probably enough to overwhelm this thread! Thanks for any help!

I don't know where that thing gets the EGR temp but I imagine it might be gone with the deletes, I would just turn it off it it were me, if you can, and just make sure your EGTs are down below 400 before you shut it down. Your EGTs will go way above 450 normally. Not related to your EGR timer thing though.

From what I understand only the Blackmaxx and Smarty can run completely code free with deletes, someone correct me if that's not right.

Not sure what causes that on decel. but not normal.

The fumes coming out after doing the delete are the same as any truck out there burning the same fuel, unless your were pouring out smoke at the time I think smell is normal. I've been behind other trucks and never smelled them and other time yeah I get a lot of the diesel exhaust smell, I think a lot depends on the conditions at the time. You should probably tighten clamps if you used them or check welds to make sure the exhaust is still good, fumes should be no issue at a drive though, never smelled mine before.

I have several more questions, but that's probably enough to overwhelm this thread! Thanks for any help!

EDIT: BTW hold onto that system you took off, costs almost $7K to fully replace. Want to sell it to me?

13Alpha,

Thanks for your reply! On question #1, I meant EGT not EGR (it's fixed in my original post now). You recommend waiting for EGTs to go under 400? Maybe my truck is running too hot, cause that would mean several minutes of idle after any short drive...

As far as the smoke on decel, I guess I need to clarify; It smokes when I let off the gas, but not quite all the way. My theory is that I'm still feeding the truck some fuel even though I'm running on momentum. The truck doesn't need the fuel, so it burns it off (maybe?). My main question is why the smoke is not black. It's very light gray... anyone else experience this, or know what I'm trying to say?

I will definitely hold on to the old system! It can only be a matter of time before they require that we all bolt everything back on...

OK, gotcha on the EGR/EGT thing, what are your EGTs during normal acceleration and cruising? My truck with the high idle on and exhaust brake on to warm up when it's cold sits at ~440*.

I had an Edge tuner on my truck with the turbo timer set at 400 degrees. Sometimes it would stay running after I turned the key off.
Now I have an H&S MiniMaxx tuner and my EGTs at idle are well below 400. The Edge runs hot and you will not be able to run code free with it either. Fuel mileage was not good with the Edge either.
My truck runs so much better with the H&S tuner. Better idle. Better throttle response. Better fuel mileage. Runs cooler, and no codes.

Early on the Edge was one of the few that would run with dpf removed but did not take care of the EGR system. So the EGR will still cycle and that may be the smoke you are seeing at low throttle operation. That is when the EGR would normally open to control NOX at low power and idle levels.

The Edge will not run code free and will only reset codes on every start. This has had some issues with the ECM not liking the continual code erase and reset every start. Eventually there are some issues that come up with that system as it will clear codes that would indicate some issues with the turbo.

Smarty and H&S are the only uploaders out that will run totally code free. Personally, I went Smarty.

+2 for the smarty. Been 49 weeks with the deletes and code free. Engine oil stays clean for 2,000 miles and WAY better fuel economy running empty, loaded I get about .5 to 1 mpg difference.

Every time I start the 6.7, I think I hear it quietly thank me for doing the deletes.

That is a great line.

I wonder if these two have something to do with it possibly still going into regen anyhow that'd be my guess

Thanks for all the input. I was not aware that the Edge would not run my truck code free, that's disappointing to say the least.

My EGT temps seem high, normal cruising is anywhere from 800-1,000... The truck runs for several minutes after driving any distance in order to come down to 400 degrees.

I'm only running the Edge on level 2. I did this to help my truck, not burn it up. Anyone else seeing high temps like these?

If you want to try and keep a check on the EGT's for now heres a test. Pull the plug on the EGR (drivers side brown servo motor) and see if that improves things.

I know of a good friend I worked with that had the first Beta version of the EDGE on his 07 6.7. He did the same with only the DPF deletes and didn't take care of the EGR. He had the same symptoms with odd smoke clouds, smokey idle and haze during low power cruising. After getting rid of the EGR, that all went away. Soon after he got one of the uploaders that take care of the EGR system.

Ludwig,
I had the same EGTs as you on my truck when the Edge was installed. I also got bluish smoke at 2000 rpms when the engine wasn't quite warmed up yet. All gone now that it's fully deleted and I'm running the H&S tuner. My EGT will drop down into the 200s when idling just a bit.
