~$32 Grid Heater Delete~
#31
So could a guy expect to get his grids out with out damaging them? I like the idea of this mod but don't have another grid heater lying around. I thought if a guy could get them out without damaging them they could be simply reinstalled for whatever reason. If I had access to a good welder I would just build the whole intake horn making it long enough to delete the heaters but.....

That's a nice looking mod. I never wait for my grid heaters but I'm wondering how low it can go and still start.
My 3rd gen starts just fine at 8* and 5000 ft. elevation without the heater. Starts just as good as on a warm day at sea level. My 1st gen (with a possibly weak battery) needed the heaters at 9* and 6000 ft.
That's fine for me but in Alaska it might be a problem.

I don't have grids in either of my trucks, but I didn't notice any difference, and they will go back in and stay in whenever I get around to it.
I'm kinda snickering at 6hp on the dyno... I can make three back to back passes and have a 10-20hp difference with zero changes

That's true - single digit delta HP on a dyno is well within the margin for error... however, a number of incrementally beneficial changes such as the grid heater delete block add up to a consistent & significant performance advantage.

Another idea is to buy part # 3922484 from Cummins. I worked the other day on a 5.9L 12V in a freightliner. Noticed there was no intake heater but an alu block. Took down the serial number gave it to the partsman, cost me $32 cdn.
