X-Monitor install
Does anyone have a write up on installing the X-Monitor on a 2003 truck? My biggest concern is installing the pyro in the exhaust manifold.
I would let a shop do it if I could find one. I know a place in Arkansas that will do it, but I'm not driving 1400 miles round trip.

The instruction I have say to put the pryo in the elbow after the turbo.
When we did mine, we drilled a hole in the top of the exhaust manifold just above the down turn. Welded the bushing over the hole and installed the pryo in the bushing.
Where are you? There is a place in Charlotte that can do it for you.

I was figuring on drilling and tapping for the pyro. My Ford was drilled and tapped. I don't have a welder or any friends with a welder. I've always read to put the pyro before the turbo for best results.

I had the local muffler shop weld the bung in the exhaust pipe just after the down elbow. This will allow me to install the Banks Six Gun w/Speed Loader or the Edge EZ w/Attitude in the near future because both of these require the pyro be installed pre turbo and I still want to be able to moniter the exhaust temps.
I hope that gives you an idea

do we need this bushing ?
I just drilled my exhaust manifold right before the turbo, tapped it and screw in the pyro using teflon on the threads
is the bushing necessary - hope not as I don't have a welder.

They would probably install an X-Monitor in my truck as a previous customer, but they wouldn't touch anyone else's Dodge.

belfert - yes I worried (who wouldn't be!).
Some one mentioned putting a shop vac on the exhaust and put it on blow (tape the vac pipe to the muffler tip so air does not excape).
I drilled until I was just about through, started the shop vac, felt air comming out of the little hole and continued to drill slowly. I could see a lot of chips comming out but I am sure some (very few) went down. when I was done tapping the hole I just turned off the shop vac, put the pyro on (with teflon on the threads) started up the truck (cold engine) and let it idle for a minute and turn it off. So far no problems or strange noises at all.
Other method was to use grease while drilling and tapping - I am sure this is as effective but I didn't want to deal with grease.

OKay, I went and actually looked under the hood at my engine.
The X-Monitor install should be easy. I didn't realize the exhaust manifold was right out in the open. I was used to my Powerstroke where you couldn't see a thing because the engine takes every bit of room under the hood.
I would wait until the Minnesota get-together on the 7th, but I have a big trip the weekend before.

The most accurate is pre-turbo, go to this website, it will tell you exactly where to drill. http://www.dieselpage.com/gipda.htm
I've put them on every diesel I've owned. Here's a little trick you can do so you don't have to remove your turbo. Worked on 4 diesels no probs and 100's K on them w/ no probs. It is also suggested on some websites....
- Duck tape the muffler ( to add backpressure)
- Have someone start her up, drill..... the pressure will blow all shavings out... In your face...wear glasses.... turn off after drilling.... tap the same way. Be careful when tapping....EG is hot....

That sure doesn't look like the manifold on my 2003.5 Ram 3500.
