Would wanting to swap to a G56 from a NV5600 be dumb??

Would wanting to swap to a G56 from a NV5600 be dumb??

I don't haul massive loads and I have no intensions of sled pulling. With that being said, I am envious of not only the drag strip performance, but also the crazy powershifting abilities of the G56. Not to mention less weight, probably lighter rotating parts, and possibly smoother shifting in daily driving???

Without the massive stress of crazy high trailer loads or sled pulling, is the G56 a more enjoyable tranny in normal driving, and high performance driving? I've seem some silly drag numbers out of you G56 guys. I like not worrying about an auto's reliability, and shifting can SOMETIMES be fun...it just seems like the G56 guys who are bombing their trucks have a blast with them.

With that being said, anyone in the Orlando, FL area with a low mile G56 willing to trade trannies? My truck only has 7300 miles on it and I have a $800 SPEC Stage 3 feramic clutch kit (which handles every ounce of the power), AND a BD short shifter. I don't know if the transfer case is exactly the same or not, and/or if the driveshaft length is any different, so I'd need someone local or who'd be willing to travel to me in order to make the swap so we can swap all parts that are unique to each tranny. I'd make the trade just for the cost of a new Southbend G56 clutch (and flywheel if the DM is no longer used). This might be a crazy good deal for a G56 owner looking to get into sled pulling and I might be dumb to want to change over, but I've got to consider it.

Thanks!

I would consider trading you but I got a SBC DD on the way and I am afraid you clutch might be too jerky for me haulin livestock.

Plus this G56 is a pleasure to drive/shift I just wish (like everyone else that has one) it had another gear.

Do you know what is involved in the swap?

Yeah, the clutch is almost identical to the Con FE, so pulling a big trailer might be a little jerkey, but it's just as smooth as stock on my truck with a little different launch technique. If you are used to letting the motor fuel itself when coming out on the clutch, there is some grabbiness....BUT if you bring the revs up to 1200-1500, it's as smooth as stock. The smoothness is the same with 2500 lbs of trailer as it is unloaded...but 10k lb trailer could be a different story.

I am clueless as to which exact parts you need for the swap. Worst case scenario would be transfer case, driveshaft, and slave cylinder, and of course the complete tranny and shifter, as well as the clutch assemblies w/ flywheel. I would like to think the only additional parts needed would be the clutch/flywheel and slave cylinder.

Thanks!

Unless you have tons of cash lying around, I'd save my money. I have had both trannys and BOTH are great. I wouldn't spend a grand? to swap one for the other.

You get speedier shifts and a wimpier tranny but it is a better feeling stick. I think might be making a rash decision. Try a short shifter and bringing the stick closer to you. It worked wonders for mine but it doesnt go into gear as easy as before which I beleive is due to the leverage being reducedwith the taller pivot point

I will say if my G56 does ever let go I do plan on doin a NV5600 swap like bigd, I THINK the NV is 2"s longer than the G but if you got 2 trucks side by side I would think the parts would change right over, drive shafts and all.

I'd be most worried about parts for the NV5600. Is anybody making replacement parts for it yet??

Exactly...I'd only consider doing it if the G56 truck was the same wheelbase and if it was done at the same time.

I really don't have too much issue with the NV, just seems like people are raving about their G56s quite a bit....makes me want one . I really need to find a G56 truck to drive and compare.
