Weird Noise.....any ideas?
I haven't done much posting here, but I monitor the forum usually at least once a day. Lots of great info and ideas. A big thanks to all of you.
Anyway, last week I heard a very different sound coming from my truck's engine compartment, just in front of the passenger footwell. It was what I would best describe as a metallic clanking sound, almost like a lightweight chain slapping around in the wheelwell. It only happened when I was pulling my enclosed snowmobile trailer, loaded with 5 sleds, up a mountain. It seemed to occur when shifting 3rd to 4th. I was in tow/economy and probably at half throttle or less. The sound probably only lasted for a second or so, but didn't sound good. I'm new to the world of diesels............any ideas?????

That sounds like turbo bark, especially since it occurred when you shifted. It occurs when you let off abruptly after having high boost. Mine barks all the time even when I try to drive around it, so my advice is just try to keep the barking to a minimum because it is hard on stock turbos especially.

I stand by my previous statement. When your auto shifts to OD it looses enough flow through the turbo under that high boost situation to cause turbo bark. Usually you can avoid it by revving it higher before it shifts.
