Not trying to be dumb...
I know of the extra exhaust valves...
But my buddy has stacks on his, and it sounds soooo MEAN...
Where mine sounds like a semi...
Does it have to do with the fuel pressure?
24v's sound a little better too...

its due to the injection of the fuel into the cylinder its not all at once there are multiple injections to lessen the sound of the combustion event. that is why the CR's run quiter and idle smoother. it also has an effect on the sound of the exhaust.

I like the sound of the 12 valve, it sounds more like a semi than anything out there. Straight piped CR's sound terrible in my opinion but put a good exhaust on them and they sound sweet.

I have yet to hear any CR that sounds better than the worst 12valve ive heard...
I miss the sound of a stacked 12valve 5spd rowing gears, and the growl/hum when slowing down or cruising down a hill in gear, best sound ever.

I think it is more the fact that they have come so far along with diesel performance that if they had the stuff now they had back then it wouldn't have taken very long to get 1000+ out of a 12, say back in the early to mid 90's for instance.
As far as the sound, you're right...generally it is the other way around. I loved the sound of the 12/24 valve engines. Then I started liking the 3rd gen more. I still like the way my truck sounds, especially under heavy fueling and lower rpm's, but it still doesn't beat the older trucks IMO. They sound more like big rigs I think. I will have a 12v one day.
