I've heard a few straight piped 3rd gens, and they sound good IMHO... my buddy's 600 w/ the louvers facing backward sounded pretty dang good actually, but with a quieter "performance" muffler, they just don't sound right to me...

but straight piped, they sound good!

Forrest
Looking at that picture you would be looking at it from the turbo side on my truck...so I guess they're facing backwards.

I'm surprised you're not happy w/ the sound... my buddy's 5" system w/ that style muffler sounded pretty durn good

but I'd still straight pipe it!

I'm much more happy with it now than I was when I first installed the system. At first I absolutely hated it. I thought it sounded like a ricer on steroids. Over time either the sound has improved with the collection of soot in the pipe or I've just gotten used to it. I like the sound now...but it's not quite the sound I was hoping for when I changed the exhaust. It sounds REAL good coming out of the tailpipe, but there is still a bit of ricer resonance coming from the muffler area.

I have some decisions to make, im starting to really enjoy the sound of mine straight piped. I wasnt so sure at first and had my doubts I have a muffler on order but i may keep it like this now.

Anyone know of any negitive effects of not running a muffler on these things besides extra noise and possible law enforcement issues?

I have had mine straight piped for about 5 months now. I love it. What I like even more is the look on people's faces when you get next to them on the highway and stomp on it .

The main reason I went with the straight pipe at the time was the cost $55(local muffler shop) vs $400 for the 5" setup I wanted. I noticed right away about a 150 degree drop in EGT's just going down the highway at about 65-70. Turbo seems to spool a little quicker.

All my friends think it sounds like a Peterbilt coming down the road. Especially when the turbo is spooled.

Go for it....Do it....Do it...Do it.

I've have mine straight for a while. Even towing, I don't think it's bad. You really hear it when you are next to something. Anything, even other cars make it bounce back at you. If you are a windows down type driver it is significantly louder than stock. I like it. Mild bomb's are next.
