Your truck would sound awesome straight piped. Mines straight piped but its a 99 CTD. I love the way the new ones sound straight piped.

I think the 3rd gens sound to raspy. The older trucks sound great. Ran mine 1 week straight piped and did not like it. See if you can unclamp the muffler, take it off, and hear for yourself. I ended up with a 36'' by 4'' i.d. glasspack. Sounds low and mean.

I put a 4" pipe in place of the muffler and I love it. I think it gave the truck more of the sound it should have for being such a powerful diesel. I am near Columbus, also.

does anyone recommend a good muffler to replace the stock with that will give a real nice deep tone but without being really annoying and without a bad drone in the cab? thanks

I tried this yesterday when I installed my muffler, it had a very good deep sound that was not to loud, but I was on a mission to install my Donaldson, so off the kitty cat went!

I have a couple of pics of the Donaldson installed, I will try to post them in a minute.

I straight piped for a while but last week i tried something new. I put my dynomax (glasspack) back in but ran the pipe into the muffler from both ends until they meet, pulled it back about 1 1/2 inches and bolted in on. Sounds pretty good, loud but no drown, no serious raspy sound near shift points. So pretty much i have a 2" muffler. the only think i think might be on the negitive side are exaust fumes that linger in the muffler (get trapped) if they do. What does anyone think?

Is it not a federal offense to remove a cat from a vehicle? I was under the impression that there were stiff fines associated with removing a cat. Am I wrong? I see lots of guys on here removing their cats. Luckily, I have an '03 so I didn't have one to begin with.

Was there a big difference in how loud it was with and without the cat? I am interested and have a Magnaflow to put on...

Yes, it had a nice good rumble with just a cat, and a very loud crackle without.

I like my Donaldson; truck sounds great, and gets better mileage to boot!
