Gee, guys! thanx for the responses
For you northern states fellas & canadian guys, I've seen significant snow here twicein 44 years, sooooo...... I don't look
for snow performance in a tire much. Gobbledy gook mud is what we see here
Mesquite thorns are the worst problem a tire faces here in south tx. I really
like the bfg mud terrains because they have that thorn resistant 10 ply rating
w/ a threeply sidewall, plus I think bfg might just be right next to michelin for mileage.
Now if I can just get someone to tell me the bfg mt's ride QUIET ...

They definately make noise, not bad, but on the highway with stock exhaust you know they are there. I ran 285's on stock rims and got about 44K out of them. Pretty good considering I was pulling 10K or better probably 3 times a week. I am running Nitto Terra-grappler now. They are holding up well and ride much more quiet. Other than in deep mud, they pull just as good, actually better on the streets especially in the rain. In the snow they seems to handle awesome. If you are looking for m/t and want them to be quiet, your best bet is probably the Toyo m/t. One of the quietest m/t's I have ever heard.

I just went to the Toyo site...... Checked out those mt's...
Man I lik'em but....according to thier PRESENT sizes, 35" is smallest
tire I see in a 17" rim...they're 10 ply rated ,also...... ....maybe somebody
can point me to somethin' I read wrong...

Thinkin about those next meats......
Still running the stock 265 rugged trails.... very good tires; I'm considering
a mud tire, either a 285 or 33x12.50. I know I lose bottom end & tow power
but how bad is it....REALLY..?
My better judgement says to go to the michelin ltx...the supreme highway/mileage tire since 90% of the time I'm on pavement, but I do live
on a blackland ranch & want to go out there sometimes...just don't want to dig out a 8,000# truck when its wet. They say LTX's are dogs int the mud.
I tow a 29' travel trailer (5,000#) & don't want to lose much, if any, power.
Questions
1. Do 33"s fit on stock rims & stock suspensions without clearance and/or rubbing problems?
2. Straight out, do you notice much difference in power with 33"s?
3. How much mileage loss can I expect to lose altogether? (Going from street
tires to larger diameter mud grips)

I have auto, 3.73....and no issues......and can adjust speedo to the 285 setting used by POWER WAGON and it will be within 1 mph...
The LTX tires suck off road..i would spin on my dads driveway at his farm and the weight of truck was too much for offroading. the nittos are a good compromise between street and offroad. if heavy mud and offroad more than maybe 30% i would go with mud terrain but for occasional mud and sand the terra grapplers have significantly improved my confidence. I still use caution but significantly better than before...

I have 325s (33x13s) in the Nitto Terra Grappler but on 18 inch rims. With the heavier 18 inch rim I lost just a tad bottom end initially but gained it back after stacking my Edge EZ and Boost Fooler w/ my Bully Dog. Power is still really good everywhere...
Lost some mileage with in-town driving but no mileage loss on highway driving. Did lose about 1 MPG when towing though...
The Nittos are a great tire, I highly recommend them...very very little road noise over stock and have an AWESOME ride. Havent really had the truck "off-road" yet so I cant comment on how well they do in the dirt They do VERY well in the snow though...

I lost considerable mileage going from 265 Mich to 315 Maxxis Buckshot Mudders. The best I have seen since my tire swap is 18 MPG. I averaged a good 20 before and a best of 24 on a straight through trip to Washington State. I do however, think that these tires are pretty quiet. They wear out fast, like i'll probably only get 25 K out of them. IMO diesel trucks are too heavy to be great in the mud. My isuzu trooper rally truck does better in the mud with lesser tires, due mostly to front end weight. These buckshots are the best mud tire that I have found for my gassers, just don't float enough to do well on the heavy cummins. I think that the best 285 tire out there for these trucks is the BFG All Terrain 285 size tire. Some guys claim 80K miles with them, plus they are skinney enough to run them aired up good on a stock rim for that extra MPG on those long trips. My next set will definately be BFG AT's. Side note: Buckshots suck in the snow!!! I had to get them siped just to be manageable on the ice and snow. Don't get me wrong, they are a great budget tire for your rally truck/ mud bogger truck, just not that great for my cummins In My Opinion!!
