Wheres my stock lift pump?

I have a 2004.5 dodge ram 2500 diesel 4X4. Anyways I know I have a lift pump in my fuel tank because you can hear it buzzing big time when I turn key forward. My ? is i can obviously hear grid heater at intake when its cold out but the other day I noticed a pump type noise coming from fuel filter housing area. (I had just changed fuel filter and was cycling key to bleed)Could I have 2 or what is going on? What plugs should I have on there? On the filter housing I noticed 2 plugs connected to it on the front side. where is the stock fuel canister pump mounted usually?pics would be nice. thanks

You should have a fuel tank mounted lift pump if you have an 04.5. I think the 04's and older had the fuel canister mounted pump. Not totally sure on that though.

It very well could be the lift pump if you hear a "priming" sound. Like I said, I'm not totally sure. It was either in 04.5 or 05 that they went to the newer fuel tank lift pump.

I believe all 04.5s had canister mounted pumps. Look behind the canister and you should see the pump if its mounted there, if not its in tank.

It's a small cylinder right on the back of the filter housing, not hard to miss, unless you climb up on the engine and look straight down. It's not much bigger than a hair drier motor. If I remember right, they weren't built with the in-tank pump until the 05 model year. Yours may have been upgraded since then though.

The 03-04.5 trucks definately come stock with the fuel filter housing mounted lift pump. The 05 on up trucks have the "in tank" design.

And any truck that has been to the dealer for a lift pump failure automatically gets the newer "in tank" design......even 2nd gens.
