when do i need an aftermarket TQ converter?

right now i have the diablosport predator with the 100rwhp and 170rwtq tune. i am planning on a s&b intake, cfm plus manifold, and a bullydog 4" cat-back exhaust. do i need an aftermarket torque converter or am i just fine with the stock converter in this set-up?

Hello,

You needed a TQ the day you bought the truck and need it really bad now. They are a nice improvement to even a stock truck. Go for it.

Isn't the stock exhaust 4" from the cat back?

I'll echo what MOPAR said, everything I've read says that TQ is a must have if you're going up over 30 hp. A tranny overhaul and aux fuel pump are my next two mods.

I'll echo on what's above. Plus I'll tell ya that after I had my pmt on the 4th level 3 playing around(read lead foot) times only in short distance (maybe 4-5 city blocks) that my trans. didn't know what gear to grab. I knew I had to upgrade and soon. So I didn't not put it on kill anymore, drove it around a few days like 'normal' then went on a errand and ended up being towed home. Trans./conv. went bye-bye. This was before I installed trans. temp gauge which is a must as well as the other gauges you need.

With what you have stated in your opening thread, You might want to go ahead and get a 'built' trans. with the billet shafts. Once you start modifing, your going to want more. It's addictive-MORE POWER

You can check out the thread 'bad tranny' and you'll see all views. Basically, all of the built trans. shops are good just pick one that you have close access to. IF you should have any problems it's close to home.

Seriously, if you want to 'play' with your truck, you should get a full built trans./conv..When you don't and break something, you'll wish you did. It's alot more expensive to repair. I'm a wishing I got the billit shafts, I will be getting them soon though. Hopefully before I crack/snap one.

Are you able to do the work yourself?? It's not that hard to swap a trans.

As I may have mentioned, I'm certainly no expert, but I think you could probably save yourself a little more money and skip the S&B intake too. As far as "needing" it right now, you probably don't. Your money would be better off served in transmission upgrades, as I don't think you'll have to upgrade the intake unless you're going to do another or bigger turbo and more HP.

How many extra HP are you trying to run? Don't know much about the Predator or Performance Tune setting, but it's my understanding that if you're going to do tranny work that you really need to do the torque converter and valve body. I'm in the same boat, so if I'm going to have the work done I'm just going to do it all at once and save having to drop the transmission twice. I'm going with a TQ, VB as well as a billet input shaft and flex plate.

I have the Predator set on the performance tune and a straight thru exhaust ( no cat ot muffler ). With the intake, just buy the filter and the torque tube and save money. Now knock on wood, I have not had any tranny problems in the 30,000 miles I have had all parts on ( 43,000 miles on truck now ). I would love to drive up to Suncoast and put in a tranny but don't have the funds to do so. I don't drive the truck to crazy though.
