A boosted launch is the fastest by far because you eliminate any and all turbo lag. It's not recommended to do boosted launches on a stock tranny though. You can probably get away with 10psi or less on the stock trans, but don't try 15-20psi launches unless you have a built trans.

do you need a tranny brake and what is a tranny brake? is it just locking and unlocking the torque converter through a switch of some sort?

no you don't need a brake.... that is unless you're pushing a crap load of hp. The higher the boost you build the harder it is on the brakes but, they hold to at least 20psi in my experience anyway. Once I get up around 20 I can feel them giving and it's harder to hold the line. I think anymore boost and a trans brake would be needed.

You have a lot of other things to concern yourself with if you plan to race.

you should be able to do burn outs without a problem with a completely stock truck. Just build your boost while braking to just under 10psi and let off. You tires should break loose.

Not a recommended thing to do though.... you trans won't like it one bit.

A trans brake locks first gear and reverse gear. I have never heard of a diesel truck using one because they are VIOLENT when released. They are generally used on lightweight drag cars. My guess is the most stout trans all billet will frag something if you used a trans brake and left with 20lbs of boost.

I was able to do 20psi boosted launches with my stock trans once my converter got loose enough to let me stall it up to 2500rpms and 20+psi and was cutting 1.70 60fts all day long. I would not recomend this though as I was not the norm just trying to find the limits.
