This is not rocket science, people ask about which is which and what means what.....all the time.
Just go to their website and READ:
http://www.afefilters.com/
http://afefilters.com/intakes.htm
Stage 1; Uses stock intake tube
Stage 1; 3 Sided Heat Shield
Stage 2; Uses aFe Torque Tube
Stage 2; Full enclosed heat shield
Stage 1 has CX and EZ
The EZ just replaces the stock filter housing, with a better 3 sides shield
The CX just replaces the stock filter housing with an open style shielf
Stage 2 Cold Air Intake System Type Cx with Pro Dry S
-This a Stage 2 Kit with an oil free filter
Stage 1 Cold Air Intake System Type EZ with Pro-Dry S
-This is a Stage 1 kit with an oil free filter
Unless noted, all Stage 1 kits come with an oiled filter. Some Stage 1 kits have the Pro Dty filter, but this kit still uses the stock intake kit.
Some Stage 2 kits come with either an oiled filter or an oil-free filter.
"aFe uses different oil colors to distinguish our different lines of filter products. Gold oil is used on our high performance OE replacement filters together with red urethane. Blue oil is used on our cold air intake systems together with black urethane. We offer red oil as another option because people want this additional choice. Other than the color, there is no difference in the oil."
It just basically boils down to two choices:
1) Do you want a Stage 1 or Stage 2 kit?
20 Do you want a oiled or oil-free filter?
I would just get a Stage II kit with a PRO GUARD and be done!

don't need a smart --I've read all that info. Still doesn't explain difference between cx and xp. They are both stage 2 and can get any of the 3 filter choices. It looks like one box is more enclosed than the other but are the filters the same SIZE-one filter looks inverted and the other is flush. I just want to get the one with the most air flow.
