what would cause a rear main seal leak after 40k?

My clutch started clickin and squeelin a little while ago and i decided it was time for a new one. I don't have the means or the tools to do that kind of install so I let a local performance shop owner do it. He pulled the tranny today and called me saying the rear main seal was leaking into the bell housing and that was probably the cause of the burnt up clutch. I'm having him replace it, but i don't understand why a cummins with 40~K miles that has been lightly used and rarely abused would have such a problem.
I have sled pulled twice and raced 4 or 5 times. All other driving was in effort to conserve fuel mileage.
I'm not even gunna try for the dealer warranty on this one.
What would cause it to leak? overrev? overboost? overload?
Thanks for any help.
Semper.

It could be a number of things , but seeing that this is from a new truck , the list should be shorter , make sure that the new seal comes from Cummins , and that the installer , installs it dry , there is a Teflon coating and it is spouse to run in dry , both the shaft & seal .

R U using synthetic motor oil? I've seen that be the culprit a few times. If you are, change it to dino & it will more than likely stop if it is a small, slow leak.

Had similar problem about 23k w/no symptoms. Truck was completely stock, & tranny being built up as first upgrade by Reb of Brown's Diesel. During rebuild, Reb called saying rear main seal was wet but couldn't figure out why. Told him to replace the seal since tranny was already removed, which he did. But he did say it should have been warranty work by the dealer. Have not had any problems since the upgrade & about 15k. Just sharing maybe an 05 thing known problem on a few trucks.
