thanks for that link. so basically i need a -6 offset so my wheels will stick out 2 inches more on each side due to my bushwacker flares....
because i wanna go with a 17 inch by 8 inch rim

You are mixing measuring systems.
It's 6.5" inches which equals 165.1mm (millimeters) {6.5 * 25.4 = 165.1} for the bolt pattern for our wheels.

At the end of the summer will be time for me for new tires and wheel upgrade (going with 2008 H2s) I think. My spare (knock wood) has never been used. I have cranked it down only once it the nearly four years I have owned the truck. So I will acquire only four wheels and five tires and reuse the spare stock rim.

so how far out will the moto metal 957 stick out on my truck. they are -12 offset and 4.5 " backspacing and they are 17"by9" . i was told they would only stick out a 1" more than stock setup. is this correct?
