What Options Are There for More Air??
I made a run down the highway at 2500 RPM's just because I felt like the truck needed to run a bit (to clarify, I went 65 mph in 5th gear). When I got home and popped the hood to plug my truck in for the night, I happened to check the filter minder and it was showing nearly 100% restriction (the air filter is relatively new).
So...I need more air but I don't want to go with an oiled filter.
I need to change my oil this weekend so I was thinking of doing the cheap air box mod (drilling some holes in the bottom of the air box). How much do you think that would help? What are my other options aside from drilling holes or putting a 4" PVC elbow on the bottom of the box? Will a BHAF fit if you take the air box off and put the BHAF in its place? Would this actually help?
Anyway...just looking for input.

The filter minder is wrong, mine showed like 75% when brand new. And when I putty the Scotty on it shows 100% all the time. I think their is a TSB to replace it, mine is just their to plug the hole.........

Go ahead and drill the holes in the bottom of the air box. (Can't hurt)
If the filter minder still pulls down, it is bad. You can get it replaced under warranty. In fact, I think there was a TSB about a bunch of them being bad.

I did the cheap airbox mods and my minder still sucked down to 65% all the time, even with the AFE drop-in. I put the BHAF on and didn't even think about using the filter minder. I know this thing lets more air in......
Just pull the whole airbox out and the BHAF will fit. It just kind of lays there though unless you make some kind of cradle for it. AKRAM has the best BHAF setup I've seen. Mine's pretty simple.

Rumor up here has it that NADP has a new intake systems that uses a paper filter still and breaths colds out side air. 'Til more info comes out on it there is the Scotty air systems unit..

I used a 2" hole saw on a cordless drill, put about half a dozen holes in both the bottom of the box and the front of it (actually gives a "ram air" effect!)
It sounds great (just a bit more noise from the intake / turbo) and made a great difference in throttle responce!!! Much crisper, even beter than some gas engines!
Give it a try! I couldnt be happier with it!

Well...it's a beautiful Saturday so I got out to do some regular maintenance work. After changing the oil, oil filter and doing some cleaning up of my engine compartment (very dusty in there), I checked the air filter and decided to go ahead and change it too.
I then decided to take it a step further, so I took the airbox out and drilled a 1/2" hole in each one of the little squares in the bottom of the box. I put everything back together, reset the Filter Minder (which had gone back to 100% blocked) and then proceeded to drive the truck around a bit. I gunned it and lots of nice, black smoke blew out the pipe and the truck took off. After doing that a few times, I came home to check the filter minder......which looked as if there was no restriction whatsoever because it hadn't moved a bit since I reset it.
SO....I guess I have more air....and an air box that you can see through. Hopefully I won't get any water up in there.

I just did some major perforation to my airbox too, mild afternoon warm engine bay. Drilled 3 3.5 inch holes in the bottom of the airbox, keep looking for a bit of smoke but no luck, could hear the turbo a bit more... good thing! gotta go drive under the train bridge later to lay on it hard and hear that thing sing!

I'm curious about the smoke. Mine seems to smoke MORE now that it's getting more air, but I expected the opposite to be the case. If you're getting MORE air shouldn't you be getting LESS smoke??

Yes you should see less smoke with more air. Do you guys really see a difference in performance with drilling holes in airbox because you still have a square filter which lacks filter area compared to conical filter whether or not it's cotton guaze or bhaf you gain tremendous filter area. I just always see that in people's signatures and it doesn't make sense to me so I tried it I have a couple airbox's lieing around so I swiss cheesed one removed my bd polished stainless intake and through it on and I saw higher egt's and worst turbo lag so I put on the other one I had with no hole's in it and got about the same results only difference was turbo noise. Just a little R&D I wanted to share was kind of a boring day today
