I would start with cold air intake and a free flowing exaust. Then either a box of your choice or a programer. If you dont want to put in guages you could go with a Edge juice wit att. or a quad commander, or bully dog has the out look monitor. Check the classifieds as there is always some great deals. Guages of some sort are needed with any power adder especially towing heavy loads.

To add to that list I would say the quadzilla boost fooler. It really helps keep the egts down by allowing your turbo to create more boost before dumping it. With a programmer I can now get over 40lbs of boost and egts will only peak at 1500 degrees as with out the fooler and a programmer it burys th needle which I think is 1600 +. And for only 80 bucks is a really nice easy piece to put on. Just plugs in under the hood.

But some of the boxes do boost fooling. It would be a waste of $$$$$ to buy a boost fooler if your box already does it. But the above is true.

thanks for the input

thanks for the input. i was thinking about the edge with juice or maybe the smarty. as for the air intake i saw a bully dog on the classifieds for $100. price sounds right, but is it a good air intake. how much performance does the exhaust give, cuz it doesnt seem right scraping a perfectly good exhaust. maybe just take off the cat and muffler? I appreciate the help, please keep it comming.

It prevents the wastegate on the turbo from opening by tricking the truck into thinking the boost psi is lower than it really is. In stock form the wastegate opens around 30psi so that is the most boost you would see. It may go to 40 or so with a boost fooler.

JMO but if I was towing daily I think I'd rather have a box or module that is adjustable on the fly over a programmer. You could get the Edge Juice w/Attitude and have lots of nice features for the same price as a Smarty alone. Then you already have all the guages you need, turbo timer, defuel settings/safety features. Then you could run lower settings to tow and still crank up the power when running empty to make it fun But if your dead set on a programmer I can bet this forum will unanimously tell you that Smarty is King.

Oh - forgot your exhaust question. I agree - you already have a perfectly good full 4" stainless exhaust from the factory. I would ditch just the muffler first and see how you like it. If you lose both it will probably drone bad especially if your towing all the time. Or you could get rid of the muffler and cat and replace with a free flowing muffler. Either way no need toi shell out cash for a full exhaust system. And any intake system is an improvement over stock. AFE probably most popular - also most expensive. I like my AEM. Good luck.

TST R49. Get the version with gauges built into the unit. Adjust boost, Rail pressure, Defuel on temp, adjustable on the fly. You would not be able to use all of the settings with stock turbo and fuel but at least the box would be there if/when you want to add more. I have had one for a couple of years and it has been great. It also helped with my mileage, when you keep your foot out of the throttle.

The juice with attitude is a great add-on. I regularly tow our 13,500 lb. fifth wheel and love the features and the guages. You can set the fueling paprameters (i.e. - defueling, turbo timer, etc.) to make sure your on the safe side when towing. It is very smooth power -- better than most other performance boxes. In the future you can get the hot unlock and have more power. I've found adding an EZ for pressure adds alot of bottom end and generally drive with the EZ on the lowest setting, the juice w/attitude on zero and have increased my mileage. Both can be found second hand at very reasonable prices.

looks like the edge w/ juice is for me

from what you guys are telling me, im gonna go with the edge w/ juice. sounds to me like its the most versatile for me. im also thinking about the afe stage 2 air intake. what would be a good free flowing muffler to replace the stock.

I don't think you'll be disappointed with the edge. I think MBRP makes a direct replacement muffler. Almost any performance muffler can be made to fit with some handy work.

diesel performance parts has a kit for around $190 that has a free flow muffler, the "S" bend pipe to correctly align the system and clamps. give them a call.
