Cruising speeds on the highway are quieter now. Go figure. Its the in town driving that seems so loud. Its not so much the lound part, but the idea of it not sounding like the big truck that it did is just a heart breaker to me. I have driven it through the lot at work and the guys seem to love it. They say outside it still sounds like a big diesel. I guess I need to get some one to drive it and let me hear it from the out side. I can live with it inside as long as I know it sounds good outside. I have access to a Nelson big truck muffler if anyone has any info on them. Are they any good on these trucks? It is a strait through muffler so what do you guys think? I am gonna let member 1stgen take it for a spin and I will follow in his turd of a truck and see what it sounds like. He says it sounds more like an old 2 stroke detroit than a throaty Cummins? I will keep yall posted. Thanks for the links and names guys, I have looked into them all. If the Nelson big truck muffler will do what I want that may be the way for me to go. I can get one for about $40 my cost so I will see. Maybe I can be the Beta tester for something for a change?

Put a glasspack on it, they have some that are 5in straight through and about 36in long theyre cheap and they give the sound your looking for, but its still gonna be loud.

Oh yeah they are definetely obnoxiously loud! These CR's are alot louder than the old 12 and 24 valves. If you want that big rig sound, get you a 12 or 24 valve and put 5" on it, then you will have it. But 5" on these CR's is probably the closest you're gonna get. I recommend a 6" tip, I do believe it makes em sound a little deeper. My buddy has my same truck but silver with 5" but he has a 5" tip and mine sounds much deeper(better).

Another one of my buddys has 5" with I believe its the MBRP muffler and its so quiet you can barely hear it.

I never knew there were so many on here that were running 5" strait. Does every one have turbo back 5"? I have been told to get a rolled tip 6" tip and it will do what I want it to do. I am ok with the truck being loud in the cab as long as its not that crappy sounding. I guess I need a poll, who thinks the 5" strait pipe exhaust system sounds good on the out side? I guess it doesnt help that mine is a regular cab as well. I just want to get rid of that air whooshing sound that makes it sound like a big blow dryer at idle and low engine loads.

My last question will be this. How do the the guys that run strait 5" stacks stand it? It might be better since its pointing up in the air? Dang it, I see another mod coming soon I think?

I run the MBRP 5" turbo back with the muffler that came with it and i dont think its overly loud. I get no complaints from anyone, including my wife.

Yeah, but it tapers down to 3-3.5" at one point(it is a chambered muffler), I called Donaldson to get inside ID dimentions/flow rates on that one. Still had a high flow rate though.

Thanks for all the great info guys and keep it coming. I am learning a lot.

I think I can deal with the loud level, but I want to get rid of the whooshing hair dryer sound it makes at idle. Like I said before, I was told that a tip with a rolled edge is just enough to disrupt the air flow to the point of sloing it down and getting rid of the wooshing sound. What do yall think?

All of the 3rd gen. trucks I have heard with any diameter straight system exiting from the normal location have sounded harsh and raspy. All you really need to do is add a muffler as others have said and you will be fine, and happy!!
