waste gate?
I was towing for the first time with the truck this weekend. It was a boat that weighed about 3000 pounds. when I get to the last 2 gears (auto tranny) there would be a loud rush of air in between shifts. I figured that this was the waste gate kicking excess air through the exhaust. does that sound right?

That would probably be turbo bark. It probably did it right when you went into overdrive and lock-up. When you get that big rpm drop, your drive pressure becomes a lot less that the boost pressure. When that happens, it tries to equal itself out.

You won't hear the WG when it opens. The sound is from your AFE Stage II intake. Mine does it too with the AFE II.
If the sound is more of a "woosh....woosh....woosh" then that would be turbo bark. From what you described though it doesn't really sound like barking, just normal operation with that big honkin' filter.

that is exactly when it happened. so to avoid that, do you take it out of over dirve when towing? or is there something else to do?

at risk of looking like an idiot tryin to spell the sound, it "sounded" like:
fwapwooosh.
hahaha. anyway, yeah, it just makes one rush of air, and then it stops.

You'll know turbo bark when you hear it. It will be a similar sound, only multiple "wooshes" instead of just one. Definitely try to avoid barking the turbo. It's going to happen sometimes no matter how careful you are, just don't do it intentionally.

Yeah turbo bark is more of a shutter sound, sounds crazy, like something slams shut. I know that its actually the compressor making that noise from drive pressure and letting off too quick, etc.
