Warning To Anyone Changing Pitman Arm!

I was installing the lift on my dodge this weekend. I went to remove the pitman arm. I started using a pitman arm puller. I started cranking down on it and tapping around the back of the arm with a hammer. Nothing would budge. I kept cranking and tapping until the puller broke. I then tried to use a pitman arm seperator, BAD IDEA. I started driving it between the arm and the gear box and tapping on the arm then all of a sudden fluid everywhere. Instead of pulling the arm off the shaft, it pulled the arm and shaft down into the box and collapsed the top aluminum lid of the gearbox. Got my lift installed, but now I have to wait 3-4 days for replacement parts before I even get to drive the truck. Just wanted to warn everyone else before they made the same mistake.

I broke my snap-on puller putting mine on but it came off right as the threads stripped in the puller. You will need a hammer to beat on it as you try to get it off.

I was hitting around the pitman arm the hole time. Just would not let loose. I went and got another puller and got it off finally, but the damage to the cap on the gearbox was already done. I have done probably 15-20 lifts and never had a problem like this. Just wanted to let everyone know to use a puller, NOT a seperator.

I use Snap On puller it works as long as you know when to stop tightening and hit the end with hammer tighten a little then hit the end with hammer. Anything will break if you over tighten it always put some anti-seize on threads first, tool will last longer. I also use some Mopar rust penetrant on splines on gearbox seems to work everytime.

I used a pickle fork and it fell right off after a few blows with the BFH.

A pickle fork (seperator) is what caused this problem.

Yeah, got the tires, they look great! Thanks. Put the lift on in about 6 hrs. Would have been faster except for the pitman arm problem. Don't know why it was such a problem this time. Generally just tighten, hit it with a hammer a few, then tighten again, hit with hammer and it will pop loose. Just not my day I guess. Lift looks great and so do wheels and tires. I am just ready to drive it.

yup, seen many a shaft pulled from the box from using a pickle fork!

heat the arm w/ a torch and hope you don't hose the seal, then use the puller. (assuming your puller fails you)

Do you think this would help? Sure looks like it beats any penetrating oil.
