Very scary transmission incident this weekend....
Went on a road trip this past weekend. All 2 lane winding mountain roads most of it 45mph to 60 mph. Was going about 50 mph and went to pass a car the tranny dropped to third, got out in oncomming traffic and the rat EDIT slipped into what felt like neutral . I jumped on the brakes let the car i was passing by and pulled over. I thought at first i broke the input shaft . The truck still moves but it scared the you know what out of me. I babied it home and tested it to see if it would do it again. Same results, alot of throttle in third and when it shifts to 4th it goes into neutral until you let off then it will shift into 4th. I also tested dropping it into 2nd taking the rpms up to 2500 and shifting up to D. Again nuetral for a second or two then it shifts. The juice was on level 3/3 when it happened. I am thinking this is a valve body issue or maybe the ATS triple lock convertor is at fault, any ideas?

When my trans was stock, anytime I tried to mash the pedal from 3rd or OD, mine would just disengage and the engine would rev but the truck wouldn't go anywhere! Dealer could not duplicate problem but as I left there I did it and just kept my foot to the floor to see if I could blow it up. It didn't blow up and I just went and got my DTT valve body and it has not happened since..

Bigman - maybe this is basic, but is it possible your attitude is defueling based on transmission slip? I thought the attitude did have that protection, and it sounds like it's slipping. For the record I've mashed my pedal down with 100hp dialed up many, many times and have never had it slip - and my 48re is stock.... something is up.

I have the tranny defueling turned off. From 3rd to 4th it definately went into nuetral. Rpms went from 2500 to 3000. I called my tranny guy and he 98% sure its the solenoid. We will see.

BigMan I have the same problem with my truck,I think its related to 2005 CTD..I had a 04.5 CTD,no problem with down shifting and had OD lock out in tow/haul...The 05 is drive by wire on the fuel pedal, so electronics come into play more so than the other years, and in tow/haul there is no lock out..also when climbing a few hills loaded I find that it wont down shift floored unless I press the tow/hauland.....I hope that Dodge comes out with a TSB for a flash on tow/haul and trans shifting...

This is a no brainer, but I thought I'd mention it. You didn't mention if you checked the fluid, another thing is the trans filter may be plugged. Just a thought.

does it do it every time?,,,,,vb problems could be a cause....if the od solenoid fails open, the tranny will never shift into 4th.if it fails closed,it will shift directly from 2nd to 4th.there would also be a code accompanying this....still sounds like the overrun clutch to me.this is what handles the power between shifts to prevent the rpm flair.if the overrun clutch failed locked, the tranny would lock up while trying to do the 3-4 shift and try to stop the truck,it would also lock up in reverse.if it failed unlocked,it would do what you are saying yours does.........................bama

I went to trans shop today. The problem with the 48 re is that the over drive is to small about 7 "round . Compare to the allison trans witch is about 11" round. I have had my trans slip and show no codes more then once .

It is not slipping. The valve body soleniods will not display codes if they are not functioning correctly. I drove around for a while with a bum first gear one for a while. Truck would always start in second...unless manually shifted down. Sometimes they just crap out. It took two trys with new ones before the issue dissapeared. Have never had another in 30k. Just get the vb back to ATS.
