TS Performance Shift Master --- Review

Its kick butt... Totally works as advertised. Has 3 selectable levels, each one progressively shift later.

Background, without it, light throttle shifts from stop to 50mph, it would shift to 2nd at 9mph, 3rd by 17mph, and then wait for O/D till around 30.. Then lockup at 45 or so.

Position 1 on the Shift master - 2nd gear shift happens now at 14 mph, 3rd gear at 23 mph, and od at 35.

Position 2 on the Shift master - 2nd gear shift happens now at 17 mph, 3rd gear at 26, and od at 38.

Position 3 on the Shift master - 2nd gear shift happens now at 21 mph, 3rd gear shift at 31 mph, and OD at 43 mph.

I haven't played with it with different Smarty settings (currently beta 4.2) but it makes the early shifts go away and its VERY easy to install. Took my guy at the shop less than 30 minutes.

I love it! I got it from Chris at TNT-Diesel, the first box had a bad harness but Chris is ON TOP OF THINGS and he took excellent care of me. I highly recommend this box to anyone who doesn't like the way their built 48re shifts (speeds at which it changes gears) and to give Chris at TNT-Diesel a call.. He is the man and his customer service is top notch.

Thanks Chris!

Awesome review man!

Is there any real difference between this unit and the DTT Shift Enhanser?

Later shifts at higher rpm should make the shifts firmer right? Do you have any of the 1-2 back and forth shifting, or did you ever?

No I never had the 1-2 shift thing AFTER the built tranny went in.. Did have it stock.

As for the DTT shift enhanser I can't comment on it since I've never run it. I do know it needs to be programmed, where this box just wires in and you go. The 3 setting pretty much cover everything I wanted and I am SUPER HAPPY with it. It made the truck drive SO MUCH nicer without having it shift so quickly.

And yes, the shifts are firmer since you are up in the RPMS more when it does shift...

I love it.. Call chris at TNT and get one on order if you hate the way your built 48re shifts. Works great with my HTS. Not sure with other vendors.

I made a mistake in my initial post.. It took my guy 30 minutes to install. That included installing the MP8 style dial switch nicely in my dash. Not 3 Minutes. Sorry about that!

This product is probably not recommended for a stock tranny I'm guessing right? I'd love to have it if it would fixed the 2-3-2 gear hunt I have along with the early shifts at low speed/RPM....

So...only for built trannys?

Does your tranny hunt for gears without the Smarty installed? The smarty makes it worse because you are using less of the fuel pedal and the transmission gets confused. It would help in that case.

If it does it with stock programming I don't know if it would help.

Never mind just noticed you have have an 04.5 ... These are just for the 05+ trucks because the TV cable is now electronic instead of being controlled by your foot... Not sure what the fix for the earlier years would be.

The website says 04.5 - 07 trucks though....any ideas? I guess I could just make a quick phone call....

Yes, it only does the 2-3-2 hunt with the Smarty installed...I've tried different versions with different TQ MGMT and it always does it. I've gotten to where I can "drive" around it...but would just rather have it shift smoothly on its own....

Mine does that 2-3-2 shift if i drive it easy or dont reach 30mph. Now if i drive it not lite foot it It shifts fine. I notice when i use the tow/hall in town it works fine. But if the TS boxs holds the shift point longer that would be great.

I haven't had any problems with my built trans so far....DTT.

But I had inquired about the DTT shift enhanser to ask if it was needed or could help. Stefan at DTT said it was only for 05 and up trucks. Wouldn't work on 04.5 trucks.....and wasn't needed since they don't "drive by wire".

Not sure about TS Performance's Shift Master though. I would think it would be the same....05 and up.

Right here on TS Performance's website it says....05-07 trucks. I think the guy helping you on the phone just made an honest mistake. They probably take calls about boxes and all sort of stuff all the time.....that would apply to 04.5 trucks as well ....normally. Just not in this case.

Oops...on edit.....Looks like it contradicts itself. One part says 05-07 then it says 04.5-07.

Exactly! Thats what I saw as well...and thats why I called...so I am not sure. I might call back or call one of their dealers and see what they say about it...

Who knows...I'd really like to have it so it cures the 2-3-2 hunt!
