toyos or pro comps- i know its a beat topic
i know its been asked a million times, but its down to the wire and im wanting opinions on this. im looking to order tomorrow, and a set of 4 are about the same dang prices so thats not a factor. im wondering what everyons experiences are with either tire, and what you would go with. appreciate the opinions and insight on this. i daily drive the truck, may take it down the strip a few times, or possibly pull once or twice with it. so the tires will be used. so spill..
oh yea, if you dislike both, please express what your tire preference is.
size will be 35x12.50

ive ran both brands of tires, but I am partial to toyo. ive ran a couple sets of them and I like them alot. I would get an E load range because the weight of our trucks and if you plan to tow anything. In most cases you get what you pay for

I just went to an 18" rim and got toyos. They are basically a 35X11.50 and they are E rated - I HATE THEM. They ride and handle terrible. I think it's because that large a tire in an E rating is way to stiff. The load rating is over 4200lbs/tire. I had Hercules Terra Trac ATs on my stock 17" rims in a 315(35x12.50) and they are one of the best tires I have ever owned. They were D rated with a rating of 32??lbs I think. I just ordered some shocks to try and gain back some of the handling and ride I lost going to these Toyos. I am also very disappointed in the dry road traction as compared to the Hercules. I have no experience with procomp, but I have run many many other brands on 4x4s for over 20 years and those Hercules were probably the best tire I have ever had on a truck. They are also a lot less expensive than Toyos or ProComps. The only reason I didn't get them again, is because I went to the 18" rim and they don't make the size I wanted. In hindsight, I seriously would have kept the stock rims to run the Hercules again.

That is the big mystery...
I can run 35 psi in one "D" rated tire...that is load rated for more than most "E" tires...
At 35 psi, many "E" rated tires look flat.
There is nothing flimsy about the XAT.
There are not really in the same class IMHO.

I don't know how you use your truck, but last year I purchased a full set of "Toyo Proxes ST" 275/70R/16 tires for my 1996 Dodge CTD 12 valve and am
very happy with them! I know the "Toyo" brand you are talking about is different than the "Toyo Proxes ST" I am running though as far as tread etc.
I drag race alot and had been running "B.F. Goodrich All-Terrain KO's" and found out that the "BFG"s" were only "speed rated" to 95 MPH! These "Toyo Proxes ST" are speed rated to 130 MPH and they grip like crazy both at the drag strip and on curvy roads. IMHO,....The ONLY "con" to them
is the fact that because of their "softer" tread, they will not give you the high mileage as some other brands would. But, the price on them was GREAT compared with the "BFG's." I paid just $114.00 a piece for the tires and at the time the "BFG's" were running around $185.00-$190.00 a piece. They ride real good,..... very smooth and I see very little difference in the ride between the "BFG's" and these "Toyos."

I have the Pro comp XAT, Great tires, I've had them for a year and they still look new with about 15000 mile on them. They do sing a little but not bad for how aggressive the tires are.

I checked "other". The main reason is, do you plan on doing any towing? Neither Toyo or ProComp make a A/T, 10 ply, "E" rated tire in 35/12.50r17. Toyo does have 10 ply "E" rated M/T in 35/12.50r17. I ended up getting Nitto TerraGrapplers (A/T) in 305/70r17's. They are 10 ply, "E" rated tires with a max load rating of 3850lbs per tire. They are just shy of 35's.

I tow all the time, I tow upto 25,000lbs loaded goosenecks with 35" kumho that are "D" rated and havent had any problems yet. Very good tires, and alot cheaper then toyos or procomps. Had procomp Xterrains loved them, but they were bald at 20,000 miles.

I had the Nitto Terra Grapplers on for 25k (285/70's), got the toyo at's (285/5's) last week....both were "E" rated....between the two, I like the Toyo's much better....the Nitto wore pretty quickly, and i like the handling and ride characterisitcs of the Toyo's so far, and i think they'll do much better than 25k for wear.....
I'm not going to jump into yet another "D" vs. "E" war...i'll just say the truck came with "E"'s and so i'm sticking with "E"s....as i don't really know the difference...

I tried 35" Toyo AT's and they were smooth on the road yet were just too mushy, especially when cornering. I got rid of them with plenty of tread left and went with Toyo MT's and couldn't be happier. Night and day difference. Still smooth as can be, a little noisier, but not much at all, and they make the truck handle so much better because of the stiffer sidewall, due to less flexing I suppose.

I'm runnin' the 35" X-AT's on stock ThunderRoad rims and I like them a lot. I haven't towed much weight with them but I do think they are very nice tires overall. With added weight in the bed they handled the snow on my inclined driveways to my satisfaction. Without it they acted like slicks just the rest of the brands I've tried and only dug the soft stuff up more when I slid off. They are not noisy until they wear some and then you rotate them and they quiet down again. Great tire at high speed (80+ mph) for extended periods. Very smooth on all road surfaces. No sway in the turns, even at high speed. Excellent dry and wet traction (with the traction device in the bed breaking the rear tires on dry asphalt became impossible, almost, hehehe). Some bounce over city potholes, r.r. tracks, etc but hey, better that than a broken rim. So far I have logged more than 30k miles and they seem to be wearing just fine, at about half way. I would reccomend these tires for moderate off-road use, moderate rock climbing, and a excellent choice for any daily commuter. If you think you are going to max out the GVWR every time you tow choose another tire and go for overkill, but if you do the math you will see these tires can handle as much weight as the truck will allow. I run the full 50psi constantly.
I like them so much they will probably be my next tire. Very close runners up - Toyo Open Country M/T, Interco Trxus, Dick Cepek Mud Country.
I went with the Pro Comps because after utilizing the resources here, exhaustive searches on the web, price, warrantee, reviews, it eventually came down to counting the number of Sypes (thin groves cut into tread blocks, help to maintain traction on icy and wet surfaces) and they had the most of these per treadblock for the money.
My only con is that the sidewalls aren't as aggressive looking as some other tires and I wish they were (I saw some with skull and crossbones, how cool is that?!). But then I am the biggest poser I know so........
Good luck,
Fruitman
