Lightbulb Tip for Amsoil BMK-11 Bypass Installation

Well . . . I installed my Amsoil bypass system about 2K miles ago. Ever since I installed it, I have heard a rattle sound around 1200-1400rpm's. VERY annoying. I mounted the filter on the firewall (pic in gallery) and thought it was vibrating there . . . NOT. Long story short, after checking many things, I found out it was the harmonic sound of the oil going through the inlet line. If you are installing the BMK-11 system, make sure your input line from the full flow filter is not 14" long, but at least 18" long. As soon as I lengthened the line, the noise stopped.

It's just one of those freak things, but if this post can save one person the aggrevation that I went through, then it is worth it.

that's weird that 4" worth of tubing would make a difference?

Yes i know . . . the strangest thing. The pulse of the oil pump at that rpm what that length of hose makes a metal to metal sound. I know it sounds crazy, but when I lengthend the hose 4", the noise went away. I used the exact same connectors and everything. Probably a one in a millon problem, but it happend to me

My friend got in the truck and the first thing he said when he heard it was "it's a hydrolic noise". It's oil going through a line. I couldn't believe it.

You probably hit the resonancefreq. for the hose dimension and the specific media runnin through... hehe

Good job, FirstDodge. Glad we got rid of the noise. It sounded like a little mad hornet in your dash.

Now how did you get the notion to lenghten the hose in an effort to eliminate the sound? (maybe i missed a previous post on this issue)

I'll go back to the 1st gen forum now.

Obben hit it on the head. It is about the resonence frequency. The oil resonates at a certian frequency in that diameter hose. If the hose is longer or shorter, it will change the point where it resonates. I couldn't go shorter because it wouldn't reach the filter, so I had to go longer. Another option would have been to go to a larger diameter hose. Obben or PhotonPhixer can do a better job explaining it. Now that the hose is 4" longer, it hasn't made the sound once.
