Thoughts on fly cut pistons and a big cam

I am building an 06 common rail. i am looking to make between 800 and 900 on fuel. i was planning on pulling the pistons and having them cut so i can put in a big cam but now im hearing that a regular street cam is just as good. any thoughts??

There are more and more trucks running 800 plus and most have stock pistons. It's not a gasser you can save some cash and just do a mild cam and keep the stock pistons. You can find something else to spend all that cash on. JMO

For the most part, the profiles that need the flycuts are moving air suitable for the 4k-5k range and are more for dedicated pullers and the like and you will lose a fair amount of low end streetability. A good cam that is a drop in will get you to 900+. Flycuts, if you want to do them as far as a safety margin and give some adjustment leeway, do not need to be more than .030" to be effective with the drop in cam. In contrast, even the "big" cams right now are .060" max. (used to be a .100" in the past) I agree with RyeThomas above... save the money for something else. Also, it will lower your compression... better to keep it.

I agree, youll also be much better going with 03-04 pistons and 03-04 injector nozzles.
