Thinking of trading in my '06
Im thinking about trading im my truck this weekend and needed some input for you guys. i know that i wanna stick with the cummins but which one?? i know i wanna stay away from the new ones cause of all of the problems. but which is the best all around truck. i have 2 different boats that i pull and im getting a 5th wheel camper for hunting.
im kinda thinking about an older 12 valve but not sure. the only reason i say that is like the loudness of it. plus there are alot of easy mods that you can do to it.
all input appreciated............

I'll trade you straight up for my '01. It makes nice power and is plenty loud.
Heck, I'll even put the 3850 SB DD in it thats sitting on the floor board.
STRAIGHT UP!!!! COME ON.... only 120k on the od.

Sure there are lots of easy cheap mods you can do to a 12V. Of course you'll have to do all those mods just to be even close to the stock power of your '06.

What did you have fixed that broke again?
Brakes are a pretty simple thing. If they didn't get fixed right the first time, it was mechanic error, not a fault of your truck.

That makes two of us. But I'm going to wait until the 09's come out.

mostly the front end, then the navigation went out, now the front end went out again, plus the leaks from the radiator and hoses, granted it is under warranty and it only costs me $50 to get it fixed, its just the time and effort that i have to put up with getting it fixed. cause i have to have a 4x4 to get to my house right now cause of all the snow melt off.
maybe not a 12 valve but maybe an older 24 valve????? not too sure at this point what i want......or would be happy with.
oh and what engine is the '09 supposed to have in it??

I'm buddies with a couple of diesel mechanics who work on all manner of Cummins motors. They drive 12 valves, but admit that the 3rd gens are far superior in many respects. Sure it's super easy to tweak the pump, swap injectors, crank the timing etc, but still there will be less power than with a stock 3rd gen. You really have to spend some money to get big horsepower. Additionally they're really smoky and never really clean up too well.
The dynamic timing in a common rail and the power available with electronics makes them far superior. Additionally, the brakes in 2nd gen trucks just suck. No other way to say it.
IMO the best 3rd gen is an '05. Get yourself a nice '05 with a NV5600 and you'll have a bulletproof truck. I miss my '03, essentially the same truck with a little less power
