Synthetic time

Just hit the 27,000 mile mark on the beast . Time to reward her .... installing Oilguard 1-micron bypass filter and Valvoline Premium Blue Synth !!!Nobody around here seems to carry it ordered it at Napa for $7 /qt ,little pricey but Cummins endorses extended drain intervals with the stuff so it must be good ! Shooting for the 20,000 mile cycle with oil sampling & filter changes every 5000 miles or so .

Make sure you write down all your extended oil changes and tell the person buying your truck you changed oil every 20,000 miles. I'm sure they will be so impressed they will offer you even more money that you are asking.

According to your post you are only driving about 15K a year. It makes no sense for you not to change your oil per DC's recommendations. You have made a SUBSTANTIAL investment in a long term truck engine. Why would you do that? What benifit are you trying to gain?

However, it is your truck. Do what you want. Just make sure you tell the next guy buying it about your experimental maintance schedule.

I don't mean to flame you on this, I really don't, I just don't understand your rational.

I have to agree. I dont get it, perhaps I am missing something. Why are folks going through all this effort to not have to change thier oil. If you are driving 100,000 miles a year, then I would understand. I LIKE changing my oil. I drive 25,000 miles a year. That equals 3, or 4 changes a year. Not a big deal.

I must be missing something

I have to say I agree with the other posters. If you have to go to the trouble to change out the filter and oil sample it every 5k, then why not just drain and refill the oil at the same time?

I am not knocking synthetic oils or their use if that is what the truck owner wants. But, I have not been convinced that they actually offer any long term benefit to an engine that has fresh oil and filter put in every 5k like mine.

Blackstone labs tester advised me that even if the oil is synthetic it still has microscopic metallic particles circulating through that block. Those need to come out and the only way to accomplish that is to drain and fill with fresh. Filters only catch so much.

Good luck with whatever you do. I am going to reward my truck with fresh Rotella T Dino every 5k.

Synthetic is a winner in extreme cold conditions, otherwise save yer money and use the premium blue dino, it's so much cheaper!IMHO
Cheers
