Wiggs and others,
Forgive the ignorance first off as it has been some time since I have been into the audio scene...
My questions is this... Do you think I could achieve a tight, well balanced sound w/some punch doing the following;
Retain the stock head unit (Nav/VES/CD/Sat thingy)
Replace OEM speakers with properly powered seperates in the stock locations
A small (8"?) sub in the under section of the center console utilizing a custom enclosure (is there enough room to support a small sub if the enclosure was custom formed to utilize every bitty bit of space in there?).
Thanks in advance.

I would be willing to be that with an Auto, you could get a good size 10 in there with a custom box. Moreover, what you want can be easily achieved with something like the Alpine OEM Integration modules. I prefer Alpine's products over any other and have been using them now for about 10 years. They have a product that will allow you to retain the factory head unit, but will take over ALL sound control functions and allow you to use separate speakers, and amps. All the factory head unit will do is control what source is being played. You will end up with a very nice sounding system. I Love the Alpine Type-X speakers and subs; they are phenominal. Might I also suggest Dynamatting all of the door panels when they have them off to replace the speakers. The more you put down (everywhere) the better the truck will sounds, the quieter it will be, and the more efficient the speakers will play.
Good luck and post pics!

Agreed on the dynamatting - it is planned and I look forward to quieting an already respectably quiet (for a truck) cab.
The Alpine integreation module - you say that you can retain the stock unit, but the Apline then controls the sound function controls? Would one still use the steering wheel and face controls of the OEM unit?
EDIT - never mind Wiggs, I am on the Alpine site educating myself - thanks for the direction.

The model is PXE-H650 and will be released in November. It will definitely be worth it!

Wiggs...anything is possible for a price..im sure someone could custom fab you a functional center console with a 13W7 in it...ive been looking at options for my Quad Cab...just not too happy because i dont have near the room to work with...if you really want to have a crazy system, throw a bed cover on...have a custom box made with 4 JL 13W7s in the bed and port it into the cab...now that would be insane

and as you can see their 8"w7 requires 6.8" of mounting depth.

You would have to most likely remove the plastic ring and fab a box. the ebay replacment is just so easy. Either way your going to need amps. I recomend getting seperate ones for the sub and components (as opposed toa 5 channel amp).
