Straight pipe

I just had my muffler taken off and a 4 inch pipe put in its place and it sounds great, i actually want it to be louder,I left the cat on there for warranty concerns but when thats up im goin 5 inch straight pipe goin to 2 6 inch stacks. As for leavin the cat on or off i cant tell you, but with just the muffler off it aint too bad untill you really get on it and even then it sounds awesome.

I got a 36" piece of 4" exhaust pipe today...........do you think I will be able to put it on myself, or will I need special tools to get the muffler off and the pipe on?

its a new truck, so it shouldn't be rusted on too bad.

The rust isn't the problem...............it's the crush-type muffler clamps the factory uses when assembling the exhaust system onto the truck.

Amen brother!
I hate those things
Every time we exhaust a new vehicle, the whole system gets sawzalled off, any remaining crush-clamps are removed by the bandsaw, and the new stainless steel exhaust goes back in tig-welded (butt or slip-joint) or bolted (we fab our own SS flanges & gaskets) together.

Those crush clamps are a total pain, and just plain cheap! I wish the American auto manufacturers step up to the quality of the Japanese exhaust systems. Their systems are flanged, even on their lowest priced cars, and a snap to work on. They've been doing this for a good 25 years.

Toyota makes good money offering their TRD mufflers for various vehicles, which just bolt onto the flanges.

Oh! Then what's the pipe in between the turbo and the muffler? It looks like either a kitty or a resonator. I do believe I am going to straight pipe the whole thing. Do 04's have 3.5 inch exhaust or 4?

Is it an 04 or 04.5? Early 04's were the 305/555 version without cats and 3.5" pipe to muffler, 4" pipe after the muffler. 04.5's (any truck built after Jan 1, 2004) is the 325/600 with cats and 4" pipe from the turbo back.

There have been a couple hints as to the main problem with straight pipes - depending on the rpm you run at and the load when towing heavy, you can get a steady drone sound that will maybe bug you. It did me, and I tow the same load a lot, so the Geno's came off. Loved it when not loaded though, wish I could have it both ways!

I was just getting ready to order the M E K from Geno's, when I noticed it says it is a 3" pipe, obviously smaller than stock. Will this let the exhaust flow better than with a muffler, but also provide just a bit of backpressure which it needs? I went to two muffler shops today, not one has 4" pipe. 3 and 3.5 inch is the common size. I may just go get a piece from a truck shop, and have a muffler shop bend it to a S, due to the offset stock system. Anyone got a quick list of hardware needed for the install?

I just took my truck to a diesel performance shop and he said it's a 2004.5. He cut me a piece of pipe and expanded the two ends so I only have to slide it on and clamp it. Cost me $90 bucks and I can't wait til I have time to put it on. I just bought a banks six gun tuner off ebay and it said for 03-04. I guess it won't fit my 04.5? I hope so but if not then I can resell it. I hope I like the straight pipes.

I just finshed straight piping mine about an hour ago. What a bear! I hope you don't have any illusion of saving the muffler. I tried and failed. I ended up just cutting it out. Geno's does make a 4 inch pipe, as I just installed one. At idle it is hardly louder than stock. I had my wife drive it around the block so i could hear what it sounded like outside the truck. Not bad. Very nice growl. I love it. Inside the cab it is no doubt louder. But my wife and i were able to carry on a conversation without a problem. Overall, a good mod. I love the sound and the feel of it. Not to mention it compliments the Quad and the cold air kit very nicely I can't wait to hook to the trailer this weekend!
