According to HTT, the Hy 35, Hy 9, and He 341 all have the same compressor wheel. So any differences would have to be on the compressor cover or on the exhaust turbine wheel and housing. I trust HTT to know their turbos so I can now definitively state that all cummins turbos from 98.5-04' came with a 54mm compressor wheel inducer and 78mm exducer.

I can pick up a used 351 for 250 bucks thats local. I believe that my truck does have the HY35 on it since its an early (sept of 02) 03 build truck. I think that my brothers 351 on his 06 spools faster than the turbo on my truck and we are using the same programming and everything, not to mention his holds higher boost. For 250 bucks would this be worth the install time and cash for this turbo?

ETA you don't have an hy35, they were second gen only turbos. 3rd gens have a different configuration.

I'm kinda bringing this thread back from the dead but my daily driving EGTs actually jumped slightly, and by my SOTP meter I think 50hp is a realistic gain.
Towing however EGTs saw a drop, climbing hills out here in CO I've been at around 800-900 degrees, just holding 45 mph. With my #4500 flatbed loaded up with another second gen cummins. Which I couldn't belive. Ofcourse that will change in the summer time once the outside air temp is warmer than 20 degrees.

I just picked up an 04 305 truck and this will be one of my first mods. I have already gotten a later model elbow and I have a 4" DP on the way too. I'm gonna make my own exhaust and I'm hoping to have one of these turbos by the time I do it so I can do it all at the same time.
Question though......
For someone with no fueling box or programmer, or for someone who is only running the most moderate amount of extra fueling, Couldn't we just clamp the hose to the wastegate shut and not have to worry about it? With stock fueling the wastegate shouldn't ever open anyways, right? The 07 I used to have had a problem making boost so I put a clamp on the wastegate hose and never had a problem again while I owned it. Has anybody tried this?

I have ran my He351 clamped many times. With near stock fueling I don't see an issue running the wastegate disabled; you're right, it rarely opens with stock fueling.
I bet it would take 100 HP over stock to make 42-43 psi and this turbo is tough enough to hit mid 40 psi all the time.
I would pinch the line and disable the wastegate if my HP goals were 425 or less.

And that's definitely more than I plan on making. I'm gonna run a Van Aaken C3.2 duration box and MAYBE will turn it to the middle setting which will probably put me in the 300-325 rwhp range I think. With this turbo maybe I'll see 350 or 375hp depending on the true gains with the turbo. I just don't want to go through a bunch of hassle and expense when I really don't need to. I'm just trying to make the most efficient tow rig that I can.....

At that HP level that turbo will be great, I turned it down to around 450hp or so when I towed with it and the EGTs were very controlable. Even at elevation. But that wasn't enough for me so I had to buy twins

If I was towing all the time i might go that route but for me it's once in a blue moon so I will be OK with just a slight upgrade in the turbo.
Thanks for the good info here. Now I wish I had kept the brand new turbo from my 07.....
