Yes that is not normal behavior for our trannys. I have an extra 60hp and it almost never shifts out of overdrive while towing my 11K trailer. We all wish we had better transmissions. But I'm with I don't want to spend that kind of money on a built tranny yet. I'll wait for something to break first. After all I do have to answer to a higher authority........

Ya, my tran is starting to act shi#$%^, really makes you think twice why some of us gave up our allisons. And yes Im running crazy larry on my new 06, I only have 6000 miles with it on there. My 03 and 05 Allys had 60000 and 30000 miles on them with the edge on 5/5. I will get this tranny warrantied!

I didnt add anything to my 03 3500 and the Tranny handles pulling my 11K 5er just fine for 3 years now. In my humble opinion, You shouldnt be adding HP without moding the Tranny anyways/

I dont agree with that, I pull with a lot of campers down here in ga and 3/4 of them have dodges with the 48re, I dont know of any with problems, having said that, most of these folks are up in thier 50's and beyond and dont fool around with adding all those gadgets to produce more torque and HP. Therefore the tranny's lifespan/work as they were designed too. I've been pulling for years with mine and zero problems so far......
it'll probably break down tonight now..

I'll second checking the Bully Dog "do you want extra power down low" option (only reccomended for upgraded trannys). When I had that enabled, I got some turbo bark and the downshift was a little more sensitive.
My tranny is great with the new valve body/TC- I'd highly recommend getting that setup if you haven't allready.

i would agree if you said "stock automatic trannies" but i see nothing wrong with a modded dodge tranny. yes its typically 5-7 grand that you would prefer to spend elsewhere....but trucks with autos can rocket the quarter mile like no other!

Fair enough. . .Dodge rules apply to STOCK parts only. . .but when I spend 30+K for a toy I hope I don't need a new TC and other items just to insure I don't spend 2/3 K later.

Seems hardly fair to bash the transmission when folks are doubling the power of these motors. That would be like me jumping on your back and telling you to run a 4 minute mile and then complain when you give up 200 yards later.

When my first and only Auto crapped out at 70K miles it had not had a hard life. . . . Slide in at the time weighed in at 3K and the boat was about 3.5K. But this was a daily driver so 90% of the time I was empty. . .The stock tranny should have worked for at least another 100K. The tranny shop had seen plenty of Dodge undersides. . . .and was not a bit supprised to see me.

Hard on 48re
Number one - bet you are running 3.73s
Number two - you are running 35" tires
This combo is hard on any stock tranny or clutch.
Go get the local kids bike and put it in 7th gear and race to the end of the driveway. Those first 50 feet are

I've got 123k on a stock 48re. Even have a part missing from it and it still yanks a 32' GN and backhoe like I want it to.
I'm not 50 yet so I still run it hard too!
I don't care if they put chipmunks in the tranny as long as its behind a Cummins what more can you ask for.

I thought the same thing bout autos but i bought one. I figured a good clutch for the 6 speed was gonna cost almost 1k so why not put another 1k or 1.5k with it in an auto. No shiftin, no headaches and its faster.
Besides slammin gears with a 6 speed is hard on the rear end.
