Stock air box mods, part 2

Based on the results others got in another thread
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...naldson&page=2
I decided to try this myself. I was shocked at the results and thought I'd add my results to the group.

I have an '06 that is bone stock (new Fleetguard air filter) with 26,000 miles on it (I bought it used with 21k). When I average my fuel mileage over that 5000 miles (minus the 10.8 I got pulling a 5000lb trailer at 75+ mph) I get pretty consistent results:

Hand-calculated mileage averaged 16.4 (with a range of 15.6 to 16.9)
For comparison's sake, the overhead averaged 19.4 mpg (range of 18.8 to 19.8)

I drove a baseline route prior to making any mods, resetting the overhead first and got 19.8 overhead.

I cut the entire front out of my airbox and added a few two inch holes to the bottom for good measure. Then I reset the overhead and drove the same route. This time, I got an overhead mileage of 22.2 mpg. It's worth noting that I've never seen anything on the overhead much over 20.3 'ish.

Next, I added a new K&N cone-style filter. I reset the overhead and drove the same route again. This time the overhead read 23.0 mpg.

All of this was done within a few hours this morning, the wind is calm, same tank of fuel.

There is absolutely no extras noise from the turbo (this was a priority, I like quiet).
Off the line, it seems more responsive, but that is subjective.

In stock form, at WOT acceleration, the truck hit a wall at 3000rpm and wouldn't do anything until it shifted, then it would pull hard until it again spun past 3000rpm, consistently.

With these two simple mods, it continues pulling past 3000rpm, and obviously so. The difference is significant. (this WOT test was performed after all mileage testing)

So based on these tests with these mods, I'm expecting that my hand-calculated mileage (calculating percent changes) will increase from 16.4 to 19.4. I'm stunned just at the possibility.

I will report back after half a tank of this and let you all know what I really ended up with.

Lots of people have done basically the same airbox mod and noone has seen that much MPG increase. You will probably see 1mpg overall. That is what I saw.

You were correct. I got a hand-calculated result of 17.1 mpg after a full tank.

Hey 1 is better than 0, and for what it costs I would say it was probably worth it.
