SPS 66 + 3-flow injector dyno

Just in case some of you are interested, I dynoed the SPS 66 + 3-flow injector combo this past Friday. I also got some boost versus drive pressure numbers for the turbo up to its 40 psi wastegate setting. Results are here:

Good info. I also ran the standard htb2 and it spools alot quicker than my sledpuller.

J, Nice power and torque for 40psi. Most people say the turbo really kicks hard at 45 to 48 psi. Did you have the feed fuel pressure readings. Could you add more fuel if you were stacked big? Temps are low for a max dyno run. A hotter block is suppose to give higher performance but your temps this time were as high as I'd want to go. ks

Deffinetly good info! And very respectable numbers, i've got turbo envy. I've been eyeing that SP66 for awhile now, but the home remodeling is sucking me dry, so unfortunetly it will have to wait.

BTW, SPA makes a combo rail & turbo drive pressure guage? Would you happen to have a part number for that jewel?

Matt400 (TDR member as well as member on here I believe) sourced out this gauge by remodeling the gauge faceplate and doing the legwork to calibrate the gauge to read off the HPCR pressure sensor. The second channel is actually an oil pressure channel, but I used it for the turbo drive pressure instead since I already have a mechanical oil pressure gauge plumbed directly into the cab. Here's some info including a picture of it mounted in my truck:

Here's 2 threads showing Matt400's research:

TDR and DTR member DLeno is also coming up with a rail pressure gauge using a DiPricol set-up. Stay tuned...!

The feed at the CP3 inlet dropped to about 7-8 psi from 13 psi.

I probably could add a bit more fuel since my rail pressure dropped to about 14,000 psi-15,000 psi. The guys with the TST boxes have reported dyno power starting to drop and EGT and smoke majorly increasing when they reached about 13,000 psi rail pressure.

I also think that if I adjusted the wastegate to get 45 psi boost, for example, with a equal drive pressure then that would also add some incremental power increase too.

My highest drive pressure recorded by the SPA with the Juice on 5 + injectors on the dyno was 49-51 psi, but the wastegate limited boost to only 40 psi so unless I adjust the wastegate then I'll never know if the turbo is still 1:1 ratio at that drive pressure!

The other thing was I removed the adjustable elbow that they sell and replaced it with a stock elbow because I didn't like how the turbo would boost so high before the wastegate activated otherwise. So the next thing on my list once I get motivated is to crawl under my truck and adjust the wastegate rod. On the otherhand, 40 psi feels pretty safe to me as I don't feel the urge to drive around on Level 5 24/7! I usually drive my truck on Level 1 (mileage setting).

What I was trying to show was that by basically equal rated 100 HP injectors (DD3 versus 3-flows) that I gained about 25 HP by just going to a bigger turbo, but at the expense of 20 HP less low end power and ~60 rpm more delay in the 20 HP coming "on". If this isn't hard evidence for the serious towing crowd as to 62mm versus 66 mm turbo compressor, then I don't know what is!

I know some will also say that "people with stock injectors + TST + pressure box are making the same power as you with injectors so what's the big deal?"...Frankly I just love the injectors (DD3 or 3-flows or ...) as the power they produce is smoooth and mirrors the factory curves right off idle and beyond. That being said I have a new Ramifier MP8 and TST twins boxes sitting in my living room as we speak!

J, Great info, I have the twins program coming in 3 weeks so I have to decide what to do. I'm leaning towards twins verses a super single. I want to peak at less than 48 psi for safety and I tow heavy so lag is not my friend. If I go bigger on the turbos I will have to stack to get the fuel down low. I'd like to know if the twins program will fuel the big turbo for towing. On the stock turbo, towing heavy, most of my time is spent right between 10 and 20 psi with 28psi peak on the hills unless I need to get to the top faster then it goes as high as it goes. Most times I'm in timing only mode 1 on a standard TST. What is your cam set up for? Kerry

Honestly, I don't know the specs on it. Performance diesel cam manufacturers rarely, if at all, give this information out. The only information that I had to convince me to do this mod was from what I read about other people's results with cams on 2nd and 3rd gens as well as corresponding with these said people. Here's where I posted about my cam experiences this past June. With better mileage, perhaps better EGT (hard to tell with mods I've done around the same time), and definitely noticeable lower and upper powerband performance, especially less shifting and more "pull" in the lower rpms, I have not regretted this mod one bit!

And no....I have no intention of trying the Rokktech mod (before anyone asks!)...

And...before anyone asks - no weird noises with a cam + timing/duration box yet!

Nice dyno!

Now get that TST and Ramifier on there...you will hit 600 with the cam and injectors once you dial in both boxes. I would start with the Ramifier around 50% and the TST on 5-4...
