Southbend ConFE

What should a guy expect to pay for a ConFE installed? I need to do one soon but don't have a clue what to expect. Thanks.

My Con FE was just over $800 for the clutch, plus $375 to get it put in, $100 for uber-duty pilot bearing, and $150 for the machining to modify f'wheel for said bearing.

No cheap all in all, but I LOVE this clutch.

Slippage? HA!

Any clutch can be made to slip, but the FE will probably endanger other driveline parts before it does.

I personally thing it's the best all-around single disc out there in terms of holding and smoothness for the money. You can't do any better imo without going to dual disc and custom hydraulics.

It's pretty smooth, but doesn't like slow clutch engagement. It wants you to "go or get off the pot" so to speak

What did it do if you were slow on the release?

Nothing really. It's just that you have to balance on the razor's edge to slip it. It doesn't chatter or hop uncontrollably. The ppressure plate is setup so that there's not a lot of range that's in-between. The clutch quickly goes from zero to hero, so it's a more precise and delicate operation to slip it a little like when backing up or just trying to inch fwd. It's setup to be either in or out-- not much in between.

That said, I can see this clutch would not be that friendly toward hitching up or inching the truck around with a heavy load.

But once you're hitched, it would be plenty towable imo. It does chatter just a tiny bit if you try to sustain the in-between part, but it's pretty mild and I don't find it the least bit objectionable.

As much as i'm a huge fan of the FE, there are lots of guys who will tell you they don't see the need for it over the OFE, since the OFE has often held over 500hp on the dyno and is as smooth as stock and infinitely towable.

I went with the FE mainly because I could get away with it as a guy who doesn't tow much at all, and one who doesn't want to have to EVER replace a clutch because I've exceeded the design limits.

MY HO will probably never have 550hp, so I'm within the FE's limits, even as it wears.

I have yet to slip my little OFE, and it's smooth as butter 98% of the time. Sometimes it will grab a bit, but a hard run through the gears or a good launch will smooth it back out.

Peter's clutches like a bit of abuse.

Well...I will have an appointment in about 2 weeks to "git-r-done". I can't wait. The stocker has been great but since I put the FASS on and started feeding her some fuel I could get it to slip from 2400-2800 RPM wide open on level 5 Juice level 1 EZ but only in 5th and 6th. Lately it hasn't mattered in what gear, anything over level 3 will make it slip now. I knew I needed this clutch before the 62/14 but I thought it could wait until this Winter but oh well.

I like my ConFE. "Smooth" enguagement seems to be a relative thing, but I wouldn't call my clutch smooth. It's pretty difficult to get any high milage out of rear tires with a clutch which has such a fine line between engagement and disengagement.

The Fe will not slip unless you try and get it to slip from a take-off.

I love mine....almost 50K miles....and counting.

I paid $1200 for the "whole enchilada" installed.
