Some Guages Questions

First Diesel...still loving every minute of it and almost ready to do some guages, but have some questions.

I've not got any serious HP/Torque pounding mods, just whats listed in my sig and I don't do any seriously heavy pulling on a frequent basis; I'm mostly just interested in seeing what my truck is really doing as far as temps go. I would like to know more about what the diesel is really doing under there.

Anyone have a guage/probe set up that they'd recommend? And how difficult is it to install the probes; how much risk is there of damaging something during the installation. Any problems with leaks afterwards? Does the installation of guages effect the warranty at all?

thanks,
daniel

I completely agree on "Seeing what the truck is really doing". I have a mostly stock truck as well. I looked around alot before buying. I went with the Triple pod windshield mount & Isspro gauges from Geno's garage. Little over $300 for everything. (mount, egt, boost & trans) I went with the windshield mount because I did not want to loose my grab handle & what I have heard about the blind spot the piller mount can cause. I could not go with the dash mount because I have elec transfer case. Also a huge draw back of the lower dash mount is, you have to take your eyes off the road.
The install was straight forward. Alll depends on your mechanicl abilities. If you are not comfortable with drilling your exhaust manifold. Pay someone who is.

I could go on all day about each installl & what I found, or why.
But, do a few select searches & read.
Trans temp location-can go on forever. Mass diesel line, test port or pan mounted.
Boost-Get the pipes boost bolt for super eash install.
Fuell presure-If you are concerned.
Heck, Even how & where to install the egt temp prob is a debate.

After all that reading you will have answered 99% of your questions.

Hope this help's
Later, Jeromie

P.S. Is there a freeking spell check on this thing???

I have the Isspro egt gauge kit and it has the factory look to it. It was pretty easy to install for a first timer and it went well with no leaks and is still doing good. About the warranty I don't think it will it didn't on mine. I blowed the plastic intercooler and they replaced it with a metal one with no questions. But of course it didn't have anything to do with the gauge. Hope this helps you.

dgm, I installed a tripple A piller pod and EGT, Trans Temp, and Boost gauges from Auto Meter ($250). Very Happy with them and they look good. As mentioned earlier there are many ways to go at each of these.

Trans Temp- Spent another $80 and got MassDiesel's (massdiesel.com) tranny line with adapter for the sensor.

Boost- I drilled and tapped the air ram just befor the intake side of the motor. Easy Job to take it off and drill and tap on the work bench.

EGT- I don't plan on modifying my truck so I installed the probe post turbo in the elbow. Another easy job to remove and do on the bench. Just buy good bits and a good tap.

I don't have a problem with the A-piller pod causing a blind spot. I guess it depends on you sitting position while driving.

I agree that it is a good idea to keep an eye on what is going on under the hood and my dealer agreed. They told me the only problem with the gauges would be if I damaged something during the intall. They had never heard of warrenty work being denied because the truck had gauges. I would talk to your service manager before proceeding if you have concerns.

Keep reading on this site because there are more opinions and ideas that you will be able to digest.

Enjoy and good luck.
