Smarty and Towing

I have had the Smarty on 3 since I purchased it A month ago or more, I do not have my Comander or mounting Gauge pod yet(order the same time still on backord list!!!!) I am going to tow the trailer to the coast for the weekend, Trailer fully loaded is about 7300#s I do have some Mountains to clime up and down to get there. I drive verry conservatly, should I take the smarty off, Change setting or what? Any advice wouold be apreciated.

i recently towed about 10,000 pounds and i left my smarty on sw9 i never saw over 1200* i did take off easy though. but there was a period of time when i was running about 85-90 mph.

im not sure that this will help you at all seeing how i have an aftermarket turbo and injectors, with a six speed but that was just my recent experiance with my smarty. by the way the same day i dynoed the numbers in my signature.

I just came off a 300+ mile trip to Charleston on Sunday (towing my 10,000lb camper). Using the latest Smarty code (stock charger with after market injectors) on level SW7 with wild torque management , I routinely saw 900-1200 deg towing 65MPH. I did have some trouble getting excessive EGTs (1400+) taking off on a steep incline but that is probably due to the low-end fueling with the wild torque management.

I replaced a BDDL (with CL tune) with the Smarty and am satisfied thus far. I want to try the new beta software to see if the EGTs decline and the MPGs go up...

If you have any good size grades and stock turbo you will get hot. You can do it stock. No gauges dont pull unless your stock. Just my 2cents.

Well....mountains to climb? You don't have a heavy trailer but...if it was me with no pyro to watch I'd put it on level 1.

So I got run it on 3 put it on 1 and pull it out tell I get the gauges to tow. Anyone else, I know I can get there without it in but love the MPG increase. I had a powerstroke 6.0 thatt got an amazing 7.86 MPG towing the trailer without the Smarty I get 12.43 towing and 14.12 Regular driving. I have not towed with it but am getting 16.2 Regular driving.

If you're gonna use the Smarty, use level 1. It'll still run better than stock and with the extra timing it will be cooler on the EGT's. On older generation vehicles they didn't recommend level 1 for towing, but on the 06's at least it's supposed to be OK per Bob Wagner.

Sounds like our truck/trailer/area is similar. I used the software for aftermarket injectors/stock turbo, setting #3, mild. Spent 4 days on the coast this week having to go over a couple passes and a lot of hills & valleys. I seen the EGT's head for 1350* momentary when pulling the mountain passes at 55-65 mph. Had to watch the turbo boost also (Quad BF installed). Basically just backed off the right foot as I was going too fast for those roads. The power was there to be had!!!

My .02, without the gauges... I'd load the stock software or maybe as someone suggested, use setting #1.

I got pretty much the same mpg as Big T stated.

I just got back from towing a 16k fifth wheel in the mountains. I kept my Smarty on Level 3. The Smarty keeps my EGT temps down and my power up. I would suggest backing it off to level 1 if you don't have gauges. You are definatly better with the Smarty than stock. You'll be fine on flat but once you start climbing the temps go up pretty fast unless you gear down before you get into the throttle. One of the hills is a 13 mile 9% grade. I managed to keep it at 45mph with the EGTs around 1300 with tons of throttle left. The message here is if you are on hills with out an EGT keep your foot out of it and keep the RPMs up.
