Smarty jr. and Towing, What setting?

I just loaded the latest software and have the Smarty jr. set at Towing#2, TQ2, TM2 and POD set at 80. I don't have good throttle responce, my last software was 5.07 that I had set at economy #1 and TQ and TM at default and everything was perfect, hardly any smoke, egt's stayed under 1050 and great throttle responce aff of idle. I only use my dually to haul my 18k-20k toyhauler. I don't understand all this tq and tm stuff, so if I don't figure it out I will go back to my old software. So if any one does some good towing with their Smarty jr. and wants to share their settings I would really appreciate your responce. Thanks

Hey there I'm in AZ as well and pull up north on our big hills. On Jr with 5.09B latest ver. I've ran SW2 TM2 TQ2 and way real nice stayed in OD longer then I liked but had no issues going. So this last time I did SW1 TM4 TQ2 and it was better on how it felt but it didn't pull in OD/towhaul as easy as prior. But with that said it was way easier to get it to go into 3rd w/SW1 so egts were better and fuel was up as well. I don't use POD when pulling for the same reason you mention. Not really sure Pod was made for towing more fine tuning for every day driving.
I'm pulling approx 16k total. TQ is how much the truck defuel between shifts and how agressive it fuel at first throttle. TM well I think you got it figured.

I like SW1 TM4 TQ4 for towing. I have also used SW1 TM2 TQ4. Like TM4 better for lower EGTs although it is a little more smoky.

I wouldn't use PoD for towing if that's all you do...

Try TQ4 if you want different throttle response.

Sorry to hijack but I have a question along the lines of this thread. If I load 5.09 that has pod, does that mean that you actually have to use the pod function or can you still just load the regular 40, 70, or 100 hp catchers?

Also does 5.09 smoke less than the older jr tunes? not sure of the tune that mine has but it is a couple of years old now. It doesn't even have the options to change timing or TM.

TIA

You don't have to use the POD function. When you load the software you want it will default to 99 which would be the full power for that software. So if you choose not to use POD it will work just like the old software. The new software will smoke the same or less depending on your POD, TM, and TQ settings but it will not smoke more in my opinion

I thought that I had heard that some of the newer jr tunes didn't smoke as bad as the earlier ones. I could be wrong.

They don't on default, and can be made to smoke more or less from there because of Revo.

is it safe to tow with the timing set to 4? i've been turning it down to 2 when I'm heavy to be safe. smoke isnt a problem (its a flatbed) but the cooler egts and a little extra power of 4 would be nice. i've just been hesitant given what i've read about timing giving increased heat soak and pressures.

Perfectly safe. It will run cooler than TM2, but will be much smokier. TM4 is the original software timing profile and was only changed to reduce smoke.

I personally tow on TM2 because I don't like the smoke of TM4.

Thanks for all the great responce guys, those are the answers I was looking for. BTW I just talked to a Cummins engineer of 30 years, his name is Mike Kell and I was talking to him about EGT's and asked whats the max I should run for extended periods of time, he said he could not tell me the max but I told him Ihave run 1200 degrees post turbo (in my Jake brake) and he said I could run that all day long with no worries. Since I have had the Smary jr I have only seen 1000 degrees on a 8% climb, so I guess the Smarty does really keep the EGT's down.

Yes it does. Can you imagine guys that are stock no gauges what the egts are. I think some times gauges are a hinder. Ive pulled quit awhile stock and was just as hard on the thottle as I am now with no gauges. And now I'm like over cautious sometimes you know.

Maybe a stupid question but i just got smarty jr and really like it so far. When you tow do you still use tow/haul mode on truck. And also is there a big diff between 5.08 and 5.09?

YES use T.H. and YES I and a friend of mine have noticed .09 didn't fix TQ setting(oh well) but made the truck run a lot better, Not sure why?I sent Marco a PM on it to see if we're just special out here in the wild west.
