Smarty Jr, Gauges, And Lift Pump?

I went to get and EGT gauge so I can install a Smarty Jr. The guy at the shop said I needed to have Boost and more importantly Fuel Pressure. He recommeded a lift pump before I did anything else. Almost everybody I have talked to said the EGT is the only one I really need, but he said he recommends a lift pump even for stock trucks.

I know I am beating a dead horse, but is all that really necessary?

I think the guy is out to lunch. Sure, if you want to know exactly what is happening with your truck, then gauges are pretty much the only way to know.

If you are putting a Jr. on it, you are not going to be doing any serious stuff anyways.

EGT for your turbo's safety-
Boost for your personal knowledge
Fuel pressure if you plan on pumping some serious power.

Personally, i am getting the EGT/Boost dual gauge. I don't plan on modding my fuel system.

I would think about an trans gauge to watch that oil temp.

For the manual trucks .... boost and EGT. If you're serious about knowing what's happening then add a lift pump pressure gauge.

For the autos ..... boost, EGT, and tranny temp. Again, if you "must need to know" then add the lift pump pressure gauge.

On older Dodges the stock lift pump was questionable at best. That is not the case with your 05, the in-tank unit is quite good and will provide all the fuel you need for the Jr.

If your only going to do one gauge then do EGT, 2 EGT/Boost, 3 EGT/Boost/Fuel

Excuse my ignorance, but what is the boost gauge going to tell me? I know it measures the turbo, but what do I do with that information?

Mainly, watching boost will allow you to see what the turbo is doing-and knowledge is power.

More pressure means more power but at a cost of heat & higher EGT.

Unless you're in the danger zone, its not the most important thing...IMHO

Boost is informational and great for diagnosing things like a boost leak, other than that you really don't need one at your level. Just the Egt gauge so you don't melt a piston and don't shut the turbo off too hot. Fuel pressure only if you decide to go for more gusto then the JR will provide.
