Smarty Issue?? Is it suppose to do this

I have the Smarty SR and its set at 5 with the moderate torque. Lately the truck started to stay engaged to 4th gear and when I put the foot back on the peddle at 50mph the truck just poors out the black smoke and sounds like there just not much power there..?? Im not putting my foot to the floor. I am just barely pushing on it. Is this normal or something of concern?? It will do it on the street and Interstate driving..... I am fairly new to Diesel so I have no Idea.... Be nice

AT 50mph your torque converter is locked and you will more than likely be in overdrive. This will lead to low rpm/low boost wich will cause lots of smoke but no go. You can try kicking it out of overdrive by the button on your gear selector or try finding the point at which your truck will downshift. Some times it takes a little heavier foot to get it to downshift but them rpm and boost wil come up and the smoke will clear.

Just above 50mph is where the torque converter locks in 4th and your RPMs are pretty low, about 1550-1600 IIRC. That is just about the point the stock turbo will start to spool... what you are doing basically is lugging the engine, this is normal from what you describe the reaction to be.

Either roll on the throttle a little more slowly to allow the turbo to spool or get your RPMs up a little more before getting into it. The black smoke/no power is just from not getting air from the turbo-- it is a too much fuel at too early an rpm situation.

You got it....i even have the wife trained! I drive a lot of 45mph so have to deal with this frequently...normally put it in OD off so that i'm in a better spot in the rpm band...as far as less smoke and more power...
